UX8 test run. Tell me what you think...

Hey all, I finally got to track part of a song last night with the band on the new interface.

It is unmixed, barely eq'd and somewhat maximized. I wanted to leave it Raw as possible to display the capture quality (in a 238 MP3) from the UX8.

I know there are a few level issues but as I said, it's Raw. The onlt takes we might keep are the drums, but really I just wanted to dial it in. The guitar was scratch (we will be mic'ing amps) and my guitar parts (coolest ever) are not in yet.

Pretty clean captures though, I'm gonna work on my OH placement tonight, pull the kick mic back a tad from the beater and give it another whirl. So far, I don't regret this purchase at all and am actually quite pleased.

Song is in my profile, called UX8 test run. Guitars and bass were recorded direct using gearbox. What do ya think?

i think it sounds fantastic. i'm in the market for an interface and this thing really looks like it does the job.

i agree with the kick level, although i love the punch you got with it. big angry kick with lots of attack is my favorite thing in the world. i'd love to know how you got that - mic used, placement and eq please!

can't wait to hear it with the real guitar.

The kick tone?

I use an Audix D6 (love it!!)
I place it through the hole all the way to the back about 4 inches from the beater and then point it a tad towards the floor tom to alleviate snare bleed. EQ'd -3 @ 200HZ with a 75Q width and slightly compressed at 4:1. That's it.

Oh, on the kick... Even though the it is too loud, the reason I will be pulling it back is to reduce the click by a tiny bit. Not much as I also like the attack, but I feel there could be better balance between the attack and the body.

But yeah, for $500 I am quite pleased so far.

I seriously dont want to be a stick in the mud about the whole thing, but im stickin to wat i said in the past post. This is seriously not an affront to ur skills in the area, opinions, tastes and even song (which is rockin btw). Its just my opinion that the line 6 toneport sounds a bit lifeless and cold.

Do i agree with all the functions and ease and design? yes very much, its a very functional unit that is worth the money, but i just dont like the sound.

For a first take I think it sound just fine. Like you stated the kick might need a little help but the rest came in clean and tidy.

And ya, the tune is rockin. Can't wait to hear what it ends up like.

Can someone do a test for Crux ? Record with two different interfaces and see if he can pick them out :)

It would certainly be cool to know but useless to me since I can't tell the difference between anything.

I am just curious why the toneport would sound lifeless vs. an M-Audio unit? I get what you saying in regards to modeled tone, but how is using the pre-amps and converters without gearbox running any different than any other digital interface? The only thing would be the pre-amp and converter quality of which line6 is no slouch.

But yeah, I am probably going to start from scratch on this one. We did finish it off and for a trial run it was fine. Little more playing around with this thing and then track it again.

I have no aversion to eating my words, and in this case as ive said before its personal taste. I just "hear" them, differently, and if im proven wrong ill accept it. But in response to is their a potential differnce between the converters on soundcards, i would believe there r. As every company would make their own technology there is something different even if spec wise its the same. Its alot like two cars from different brands sporting the same engine, each company will still have their own approach to building those engines and the parts and what not. So there is the potential there, not saying its fact or anything.

I agree they are different which was in fact my point, it's also something I researched pretty heavy before purchasing. Fact is, Line 6 converters (the ones they use) are very high quality and are used in other higher end gear. The pre-amps on the other hand I have no idea but would assume they are at least on par with other $5-700 cards.

I honestly do think you are referring more to the modeled guitars\bass\pre-amps included in gearbox of which many people say it's not their bag. But really that has nothing to do with the Pre's and Converters in the interface. They stand on their own and the only software needed is the mixer to control ins\outs, just as with any other digital interface.

And although I like models for scratch tracks and cleaner tones, I am personally a "mic the cab" kind of guy on heavier guitars. The modeled bass on the other hand, I think sound fantastic.

All true, and so as to not turn this into a debate, this will be my last post on this specific topic. As i said, its not about "quality", yes Line 6 uses top notch converters, but that doesnt mean the sound is to "my liking". Much as a 6000 thousand dollar Marshal stack, might not stand up to a 1000 dollar fender combo, its taste.

So yes, ur very right, and i hope anyone reading this post doesnt think im bashing line 6, i own the KB37 and i use it ALOT. But the question of the post was what people think, and this is wat i think.

I hope this doesnt sound "strongly worded", im seriously only giving my opinion on the matter, and this post is strictly to clear up my comments that i was referring to the sound as processed by "my ears" and not comparing the product to others on spec.

I think it sounds pretty dang good, bass sounds great, guitar tone was fine, maybe a little dry sounding but still good for quick mix. The song sounds like it's going to be a rocker, look forward to hearing it finished.

You can bash Line 6 man, we all have our opinions. And personally I think there is nothing wrong with debate until it's not friendly anymore. But you are right, we both said all there really is to say.

I purposely listened to this before reading the previous posts, so my opinion wouldn't be influenced. Note to self: do that from now on.

Tripps, good work here. (thumbs)

The transition from six to four was really smooth, which is a hallmark of better-than-crappy players. Your drummer seems to have a thing or two working for him. The kick sounds good, but seems a tiny bit hot in the mix. Otherwise, Bully Bully!!
