My laptop hears itself?

This is kind of strange-- I work off of a mediocre laptop; it isn't perfect, but it (usually) gets the job done. However, lately I have been having trouble with the laptop "hearing" itself. That is, if I'm trying to overdub or use the computer's metronome, it shows up on the track. Whatever sound the computer is putting out during the recording, it shows up. I use a good external sound card, and have never had this problem before recently. Also, my line in appears to be dead. I don't receive any sound from the line in on the sound card. I think the problems are related, but I don't know how...

I wonder if you're Windows recording options (which could be set from Control Panel or maybe even your software) are set to "What you hear" or "Wave sound" or equivalent instead of Line In ???

What software and external sound card are you using? Sounds to me like the output drivers are set as the input source?

Tonyoci probably nailed it. This is a common issue that can be resolved through the windows audio control panel.

Yea dude, your mixing through the "Stereo mix" input rather than "Line in" or whatever
