Using track faders in DAW

I don't control my track volume from the track fader. I use the volume level on the VSTi synth instead. What I've realized now is that there is no way of telling, just by looking at the console view in Cakewalk, and telling at what volume each track is set to. Because they are all at the default, Unity Gain position.

So is it common practise to set your vsti instrument volume to full, and then manage the volume level of that vsti from the track fader?

Taking it a step further, my sound card (SoundBlaster Xtreme Music)has an ASIO volume fader and a master volume fader. Should I be setting the ASIO volume to full on my soundcard. And my Master volume to 50 %?

How do I manage all these gain stages. Please help.

I never mess with the synths volume. Most are set to a best output position by default. Although when creating my own patches then I will have to tweak some, or when editing a factory patch . Otherwise yes for better control use the mixer panel in Cakewalk.

And if you are using the ASIO drivers then the ASIO master will be the one you should use.
