I posted something regarding AC cables here a little while ago, I'd like to know if any of you guys make your own??? I still haven't found a place where I can get some 14/3 or 12/3 that would be cheaper by the foot then already made!!!!

I was looking to buy a 500ft spool and get all the connectors, but that still would be more expensive then buying for 500ft of already made AC.

Premade will always be cheaper. The big drag with them is that they are not field serviceable. They are molded connectors. Also, I can't remember seeing any premade quad boxes. So, you still have to build them. Fortunately, 1900 boxes are vary cheap. One thing you want to check is what type of cable the premade are made of. The new 2008 industry standards is now out. They have made so changes for this year. From what I have seen so far, OSJ is no longer acceptable. The new standard is OWSJ. Which is even more expensive then OSJ. Feeder cable can no longer be purchased in a single jacket. (All four wires in one rubber jacket.) The Cam-Locks can not be the pressed type. They must be the four screw type. (For service reasons.) Check with the fire marshall in your area. Because this year, they are instructed to shut show down! And, they have!

How would you wire a quad box with 3 wire cable?

Simple, an outlet has two sets of contacts on it. Two hots, two neutrals, one ground. So, you come in on one side, and jump to the next.

Yeah I hate those pre made cords. Plus I would like to have various lenght as well.

Do you know where I could find a diagram of a quadbox???

I think I know what you mean but not sure, do you use the same cable (short piece) with the jacket on for the jumper or you strip off the jacket?

I'll take one mine apart, take a picture of it and send it to you. The only thing that will be different is that I put a glow tube into mine. Just so you can tell at a glance if it has power or not.

Cool that's awesome.

I'm off to bed. I'll be waiting for that pict.

I wish it would be cheaper to buy it by the foot, I can't use any "show stoppers", too risky.

thanks!!!

If you make your own electrical cords and boxes, just be very damn careful. Use spade or loop lugs on the ends of the wires, crimp them properly, use a good screwdriver, and follow all directions exactly.

mains voltage isn't so bad after a couple dozen times... just takes a while to figure out where I throw my screwdriver...

I've done lots of AC so far, I usually use a power bar to test them at first, if the light is steady more then 1 minute... means it's good ;)

Actually in all the common connectors AC is the easiest to make. Maybe BNC is easier.
