Audio distortion in Sonar 6 - please help!

Just purchased Sonar Home Studio 6. Tried doing some microphone recording but I kept getting a very warbly audio distortion on playback (like talking or singing into a fan - the distortion sounds kind of like a helicopter). I thought it was a problem with the mic at first and unplugged it so I could try out some MIDI compositions. Turns out the exact same distortion happens on MIDI playback too, if I run it through the soft synth (I tried both the Cakewalk TTS-1 as well as the Roland GrooveSynth - same problem with both).

Any ideas what could cause this and how I can fix it? Is it a soundcard problem (and if so, why don't I have this distortion with any of my other software or media players)? My sound card is Realtek HD Audio.

I also tried adjusting the latency (Audio Options > General > buffer size) to no avail.

Confounded,
Sooz

Just wanted to post an update for any others who encounter this problem: I changed the driver mode to MME (Audio Options > Advanced) and it fixed the problem instantly.

Changing it TO MME fixed it? MME is like the worst driver format available...that's odd, but I guess it is a realtek.

You should check out the ASIO4ALL project, sometimes those drivers help a lot, sometimes they don't.
