I'm in the process of setting up a home studio. I have fortunately been given a copy of Protools which I will be using with a G4.
I wondered if you could give me some advice on what sort of mixer would be the most suitable for the kind of stuff I will be recording (mostly live acoustic stuff). Also, maybe you could explain how the mixer interfaces with the soundcard (in my case Digidesign 001) i.e. is a seperate output cable needed from each channel from the mixer to each input on the soundcard? Also, will the mixer be able to control what happens on the computer screen? Hope I am making sense!

Welcometo HRC :)

I haven't seen an 001 in a long time; I think everything DigiDesign makes is proprietary. I'm not sure about running a mixing board off a 001 though- you should be able to do it though.

To be honest, I don't even use a hardware mixer. I'm doing the same thing; acoustic/ vocal stuff. I just use the internal mixer in my software, as it all does the same thing.

Lemmie see if it's possible to use a non-digidesign mixer with the 001 and I'll get back atcha.

I'm pretty sure the 001 will control things inside of protools. It is a control surface for PT, which means it controls PT workings.

< begin snippet >

Digidesign Hardware Supplied with System

* Digi 001 PCI Card
* Digi 001 I/O Box
* Digi 001 Cable

< end snippet >

The above was from digidesign archives:
archive.digidesign.com/compato/xp/001/

So you should get a cable to connect from 001 to your PCI card in PC.

Yeah, the 001 will control PT, but he wants to hook a mixer up to it and short of the Control 24 console or one of the 003 Factory units, there isn't much, if anything in the way of Digi; plus, those units are usually sold as systems just like the 001: a sound card, and the board is the i/o interface. I know HD systems can use just about anything, but not sure about the 001. ::scratching head::

Cheers for your help guys. So basically I could run the system without a mixer if I wanted, am I right? I guess it gets a bit complicated when I come to record lots tracks simultaneously
e.g. a live band with multiple mics esp on drums etc. As far as I know the 001 only has 6 inputs. Any suggestions?

Ok, after a lot of looking around, you should be able to use just about any modern mixer you want with the 001. What version of PT are you running with it?

And sure, you could run the system without a mixer, but if you're going to be recording whole bands at one time, that's a different story. You'll need a mixer in that instance, and also if you're running an LE version of protools, you may find you'll need to upgrade, because you're limited to 32 tracks on the LE versions. I'll do a little more looking around tonight and see if I can't find someone who has an 001 and see what kind of mixer they have and what the requirements, if any, there are for hooking one up.

Here's the scoop; You're able to use any control surface that has HUI Emulation with the 001.

Here's a run through on setting one up to work with PT: www.sweetwater.com/expert...s/d--11/14/2002 It's specific to the Tascam mixer, but it gives you a general idea of what you're up against.

Sorry it took so long to get back with ya on this, just been hectic.
