Voice Recording (Please help me save my hair)

Is there some recording Bible that someone has already written / typed that give a pretty easy guide on how to use recorded vocals in CakeWalk? I have a pretty decent MIC and have no trouble recording, but then using the vocals in the project have me pulling my hair out. I've have the compressor effects, the gate effects, the reverb effects, but I still can't get it to sound like something I'd hear on the radio / mp3.

Any help would be apprecited.

Thanks, Allen

Can you upload a sample of what you are talking about? Something that will give us a better idea of what you are having trouble with.

We could give you tons of idea's but it might end up none of them work because it isn't addressing the problem you are having. So a little more detail would really help out here.

Damn, good sounds :)

So far as the vocals sitting in the mix, they sound a little over compressed and, to me at least, sound as though they could stand to come up a tiny bit. Also, when you're chopping up your takes, try to leave a little bit more on the beginning and end of each clip, it'll make it sound more natural. But you're on the right track. Take a listen to the first on my profile.... I'm still learning too :D Everyones opinion about how vocals should 'sit' in a song is kinda different, but the same in a manor of speaking; make sure they're on top of the mix, but still playing nice with the music.

With this musical style, I would also raise the vox just a tad. They also seem to be lacking some highs, but that could be my work speakers.

I like to add delay to my vox also, just a tad.

I'll agree with Keith that they sound a bit overcompressed. Also, I kind of feel that you could probably ease off the reverb a bit. But like Keith said, you are on the right track.
