House of Blues and the likes.

Hi. I've been doing live sound @ some pretty respectable 500-800 capacity venues for the past 10 years or so and I've recently landed a touring gig where I'll be mixing in bigger rooms...2100 plus.
I'm mixing @ a House of Blues in a couple weeks and feel like I'm starting from scratch again...so I'm wondering if anyone has any practical advice for mixing in a room like this? I'd just like a different perspective from someone who's been there. I plan on just showing up and going for it...but it never hurts to get a little advice. Ha.

Hey Mike! First of, Congrats to ya! You should have a great time. Now, as far as advice goes. Relax! Doing big rooms is easeier than the small. You'll find the gain structure is much easeier than in small rooms. You can get the sound much closer to what you want it to be. You'll be dealing with a better caliber of FOH PA. And the biggest plus, you are not doing it all yourself! Bigger rooms have people to help do most of the work. Don't be afraid to ask the house sound guy a few questions. Most guys will tell you if there are any trouble spots to be aware of. Just don't be afraid of telling them what you want. It's your show after all. Some guys will try to tell you how they think it should be. Be polite, and just explain your position, and you should be fine. I really should emphisies the politness. Guys that just atc cool the whole show, will get just about anything they want, just because they are not being a jerk. So, there you have it. Relax, be polite, tell them what you want, and have a great show! That's all there is to it!

That is the best advice anyone could have given you. You already know how you want it to sound and you simply need to relay that to the in house FOH guy for the venue. And patience is a big factor as well. And a thorough sound check is also something that will be a big plus. Give yourself plenty of time to get things set up as you and the band would like it.
