I know that some of the best sounds when recording guitars is created using SM57 and a tube amp.... However I'd like to try using an amp sim like amplitube or guitar rig. I am buying an Mbox 2 so is it really worth me getting something like toneport or will the plug in be fine as a standalone when using a di box into the mbox. Also what would you say is the best amp sim plugin? I've used AmpFarm in a protools HD studio but sadly it doesnt work on LE. Amp farm rocks though!

Jan 04, 2008 06:13 pm With the price of Guitar Rig I personally would buy toneport for the fact that it does guitars, bass, and vocals.

Jan 04, 2008 06:30 pm One thing nice about a plug-in is that it is non-destructive. Mess around with it all you want after the fact. Personally I like working with GuitarRig better than Amplitube but I would think that the sound quality is pretty much the same. BTW - GuitarRig DOES have setting(s) for a bass/vocals as well.

Jan 04, 2008 07:37 pm FreeAmp 3 is out, and getting pretty good press (on reaper board).

The dev was on here before, though I haven't seen him for awhile.
There's also dirthead, which has gotten some decent words. There's simuanalog jcm900, and juicy77. Google should help find them.
There's also a standalone amplitude UNO, which I just Dl today.
Here's a linky: www.guitarhoo.com/freestuff/index.shtml
Over on reaper there's a way to run this standalone as a VST pluging, using ReaRoute:

Just case anybody wants to know . . .
I should add, some of these do much better with a cabinet IR after the plug. I've not tested this much, but have read this on a few sites.

Jan 04, 2008 08:14 pm I went with Guitar Rig as well, I liked the sound better than Amplitube (+ I think it requires a dongle). The free ones are okay but I wasn't very impressed with them though they'll do in a pinch. With guitar rig though unless you can find GR2 which is still around online for the $349-$369 I'd pass on the version with the pedal, it's cheaply made IMO and not worth the nearly $200 more for it. I also have a Boss GT6 and I think GR will be as good as it once get it dialed in and as BH said you can record your tracks dry and change amp configs to your hearts content till you find the perfect tone.

Jan 05, 2008 10:54 pm He wont be able to use any of those in PT le with the M box. Sadly it is a very closed architecture with with that system. You can only use their proprietary pluggins. And you are limited in what is actually available for the le version as well. It is digi designs way of making you pay up to upgrade to their higher end systems. Give you a taste and then keep the good stuff from you until you spend 5 grand for the bigger system.
Sad but true.
