can someone give me some expert advice? I have a big Best Buy giftcard that i want to use strictly for getting into recording.

-New Laptop (Vista)
-want to just record guitar, vocals
-want to use drum loops from the software.
-as long as it sounds fairly decent i'll be fine.

i have 3 choices here:

1. Sony Acid Studio 7
2. M-Audio USB Fasttrack ($99)
3. M-Audio - USB Audio/MIDI Interface with Preamps ($199)

now i know that i'll need a USB to plug the guitar in for Acid right? But can any of you guys give a rookie some advice? Thank You!!!!!!

Welcome to HRC.

Well the first thing while you are researching the software and hardware is to make absolutely certain that it is compatible with Vista. I know most of the M-Audio drivers are now compatible with Vista with a few exceptions.

And I believe Sony Acid is as well now ported to run in Vista.

Are you going to be using any software synths in your music and do you need the midi input and output? There are a couple of other USB devices that might work out better for you if you are not going to use midi.

Also, exactly what type of music are you going to be recording?

A couple of other things to think about are an external hard drive for audio only and making sure the laptop has enough ram.

thanks for the reply.

I plan on recording just basic rock, mostly for my own enjoyment. A layer or two of guitars, vocals, and a drum loop is all im looking for. I appreciate quality but i realize i dont have the money for ProTools and all that. I'm kind of on a budget so I'll be getting Sony Acid at bestbuy and ordering a decent USB from online somewhere probably.

I've made up my mind about getting Sony Acid (picking it up tomorrow). Now i need a USB that can go with it (which is where im lost). If I get a USB like Line6 TunePort UX1 does it matter if Line6 doesnt support Vista (since i'll be using Acid to record)? Or am I all mixed up? Again thank you for your time. I can't wait to get this stuff.

The TunePort UX series would probably be an excellent choice for you and most if not all of there stuff is Vista compatible now, but best to double check on their website.

TonePort not Tuneport :)

I would recommend the Toneport over the MAudio. You just get more.

No need to buy Acid, just download Kristal or Reaper for free(ish) you can always come back later and buy something more. Those products are just as good as Acid Studio.

I don't use an external hard drive for my laptop music and don't have any problems as a one man band.

thanks to everyone for the replies and advice. this place is great.

the only issue im seeing is that there are people on Line6's forum complaining that the TonePort UX USBs don't work with Vista. If thats the case is there any other brand you'd reccomend along that level?

If you look those are probably old posts. The Vista drivers and software were released a couple of months ago after being beta tested for over 6 months. I've seen 3 installs of the UX-2 on Vista PC's and they are working well.
