I just got an electric guitar for Xmas (a PRS SE Singlecut) and I'm using the strings that it came with right now.
When I tune the three higher strings I hear this "dinging" sound as if the string is going to break.
Anybody know what's going on?

Dec 30, 2007 05:04 pm Sounds like the Saddles might be set up a bit off. That or the strings are too warn out or just being broken in.
Does it only ping like that when you are tuning upwards?

Dec 30, 2007 08:15 pm Try some Big Bends Nut Sauce on the nut and bridge saddles. It sounds like the strings are binding a bit.

Dec 30, 2007 08:56 pm To add what's been posted,
I always wind my strings like on a spool, with one wrap next to the last. I usually try to put around 8 or so winds on the highest strings, and maybe less on the 3rd string.
If the wraps are over each other, and kinda wrapped on the peg willy-nilly, then you'll get pings when you tighten.
I'm thinking if you untighten them, and re-wrap them nice and uniform, they won't ping anymore.

Dec 30, 2007 11:13 pm Ok thanks guys.
Answering Noize's question, I haven't had to tune downwards so far; they've only been sharp.
Dec 31, 2007 11:23 am but the pinging will go away if you just tolerate it for a few hours and constantly retune those strings when they go out of tune slightly. i never knew it was because of the way i wrapped 'em. makes sense, though. but knowing this, i'm not likely to redo my windings because that would take work.
