you know, i didn't listen to any of that stuff, but I was wondering how you like your garritan pjk (if I remember right you went in on the group by for the orchestra kit last year?)

I got the jazz kit, and i've used it on a couple things, but I have issues (maybe my midi controller) having to reset the mod wheel every time I stop and start a track so its extremely frutstrating to use. And most of the horns sound a little lame anyways, sometimes they sound good, i don't know, i'm just not super duper impressed, like I hoped I would be.

Yep, twas me.

I've used it some, but not to any great length, mostly pad string stuff for background.

Listening to the xmas songs, a fair amount of their stuff sounds fake, especially the horns. Up high, the strings sound fake too. I think maybe it's the solo instruments are weak, where the sections aren't too bad. I dunno. I'm getting a little luke-warm too.

I plan to get more involved with them, but alas, other projects have gotten in the way.

I've got a group of xmas ideas kickin around in my head, that would heavily involve the GPO, but I haven't gotten started yet. A few other projects to finish first.

Maybe I'll find better luck getting more involved.

Here's a trumpet that looked nice, for 150$ though, out in Jan 08.

I been thinking that too, maybe it's the skill of the people creating the songs. Some sound VERY clicky and mono, whereas others are very lush and flowing.

Like I said, maybe more time in deep will show the love.

Very nice pjk.

The thing about using the orchestra instruments is articulation. You really need to learn to use velocity and after touch as many of the instruments depend on it for the way they sound. Before I had a good controller with velocity and after touch I would go in and do it all by hand. A very long and pain staking process. But if you wanted the instruments to sound convincing it was worth it in the end.

A lot of these instruments work with velocity layers. Meaning the harder or softer you hit the key the sound will come across sounding different.

A couple of these are not perfect but most are very good. And the samples and instrument articulations were chosen very carefully.

Practice is the only thing that will make your use of these sound this good.

And remember lots of it is the use of volume swells and things.
