Need recommendations on mixing/mastering software

I currently record using AKG C1000 into a Mackie 1202 VLZ then into a Boss BR8.
I then convert the BR8 files to .wav format.

Here is my dilemma. I need to mix down or master the recordings, THEN burn them into CD's or MP3's.

I have a windows XP PC with a lot of CPU power and memory.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you need software of some kind, to mix / master your wav files.

Kristal and Reaper are free and shareware, plus they're easy to get started on.

www.kreatives.org/kristal/
www.reaper.fm

(reaper's my personal first choice)

Both of those will get you started on the road of mixing your music (free).

Other software will get you going too, plus give you more options, and other features. Some great, some not as great. There's a slew of packages in the 100$ range, like the LE versions of stuff. Then there's the higher end packages, costing in the 3-400 range, and a few in the thousand $ range.

I would suggest, that you don't worry too much about mastering yet, but first get familiar with how mixing works. As you get more versed in mixing, you'll start seeing (hearing) how mastering may come in to play further down the road.

Hanging out on boards (like this one) and reading back through the old posts will give you a good insight into mastering, plus there's other websites that will with some of the basics.

I believe Isotope Ozone has a good mastering guide on their website.
