Using condensor mics to record instruments.

Real easy and simple question here guys...I'm about to record some tracks for an album. We are going to record the instruments with a direct line in and condensor mics...my questions is, how har away from the instrument (acoustic guitar) should the mic be placed and at what location (soundhole, neck, does it matter)??
Thanks alot for your help.

Are you going to be using just one mic? If so, I would place it about 18" in front of the sound hole. If it is too "boomy" move it further away or if it is too "thin" move it closer.

I use 2 mics when recording acoustic. 1 at the sound hole the other around the 12th fret.

Best thing, use your ears and move it around until you feel you are getting the best sound.

Large or small diagram condensor? With a large what I like to do is put it about 12 inches in front of the guitar pointing at the neck about halfway between the hole and the head... of course you're going to need to play around with placement until you get the best sound

My quick 2 cents, if u only got one mic, choose ur room carefully, the rooms will have a huge effect on the sound your getting, and a really good sounding room can help out if u only have one mic.

I usually mic acoustic guitars 2"-4" from one of the corners of the box...

A general practice (If you have one condensor mic)is aim it at the twelfth fret. I usually put mine about 6 inches away. If you have a mini condensor ie. a clipon, tape it above the low E string between the bridge and the hole.
I did this with a dynamic clipon mic I bought for 4 dollars and it worked pretty good.
