Hello Everybody.
Me and a friend record live bands every week at a local venue using a 16 channel harddisk recorder(Roland 2400cd & SI24 linked).
We have had some good results , but can have really big problems with the overspill on the vocal mics (SM58s) I know there is not a great deal we can do about this , but would welcome any suggestions as to how we can maybe reduce the spill , would an external hardware gate be a solution to this problem?
Manythx in advance.

Nov 13, 2007 07:58 pm Not a whole lot I know of to remedy that other then getting microphones with a closer cardioid pattern; but even then, you'll probably still have some spill. Maybe check the stage monitors and try to keep them down as well.

Nov 14, 2007 07:25 pm Hey Turtle, welcome to HRC.
You can resolve the problem to a certain extent with a gate. You can find 8 channel gates used at place like Music Go Round and other used music gear stores. As well you can find single or double channel gates new or used.
You simply set the threshold high enough to cut out un wanted outside noise and your good to go. We never performed without them. And I rarely have done a live recording without them either.
You can also find them incorporated into some compressor's as well.
Nov 15, 2007 08:56 am Ive run into the same problems with SM58's . Ive found that Sennheiser E835's and E845's have alot less bleed. Also you could even try using sm57's...Ive found they're not very sensitive and they only react to higher SPL's thus cutting out alot of background noise. Id also give a compressor/gate as well as turning the monitors down. The only way I know of to get rid of the monitor factor is to use In Ear Monitors (IEM's), but theyre expensive and Im sure different bands wouldnt want to share them.....
