Mastering is for one output audio or separate tracks?

Id like to ask,
mixing is making adjustment between different tracks(instruments/vocals).

How about mastering?
Is it doing something on the FINAL MIX? Or like mixing, doing something on individual track?

Thanks

mix individual tracks

render all these tracks down to a stereo track

master that stereo track

Then, when you've got all your songs pre-mastered, you can CD master them to sound alike, and level.

I've had the same question on mastering myself. Mastering is new to me, while I rendered my tracks down to stereo I used my mastering plugin, in mackie's tracktion software on the over all mix. What am I missing or losing if anything by doing it this way. This is how I did the songs on my homepage.

I use Tracktion also. Your using Final Mix? What your doing is fine, if your cpu can handle it. You are placing Final Mix as a global vst and not in each track, correct? I use to do the same thing and now I render the mix and create a new edit and paiste the rendered stereo track into the edit and use Final Mix. Makes it easier and less tempting to start changeing individual tracks while final mix is working. So try it, get the mix sounding good the render the tune and do as I said above.

Thats correct I was using Final Mix on the over all mix. Thanks and I'll be giving your way a try. I'm in the situation of having way more equipment than know how right now. I hope they catch up with each other.

I agree with bushmaster, I render the ind parts down to a single stereo track, then bring that stereo track back into my software, then do my mastering work on that stereo track.

Agreed, working on the individual pieces would have me tweaking back and forth, so I have to keep them separate.

Plus, I think that leaving the 'getting more volume' stage to the mastering phase, this leaves the 'louder' temptation out of the mix phase. You won't be trying to get more db out of your mix, just mixing to make it sound good, and leave the db maximizing to the mastering phase.

geesh, i hope that made sense.

Makes since. Ive been recording for about a year now and Im constantly learning also. On Tracktion, if you have a track that has alot of vst's running and you cpu is struggling. You can render that particular track into the edit. When doing this choose the render and add to edit option. Then listen too the rendered track. If its fine and matches the original, then delete the track with all the vst's. I did Alice Coopers "Goes To Hell" and I had 30 tracks and my pc was struggling so I had to render quite a few to free up resources. You using Tracktion 2 or 3 ?

I have only used Tracktion 2, to mix down some old recordings done on 8track cassette. I did that to kind of learn my way around the software. I have T-3 now and I'll be using an imac core duo with it. I'm pretty close to having things set up now so I'm sure I'll be here with questions. But over all I like Tracktion, but I don't have any comparison so whatever thats worth. It allowed a software novice like myself to get around on it.
