how important is it to have the right mic when recording. i have a sm58 and an alvex mic i bought used that a music store owner used for live amps.
can i use just these two mics and get the right sound recorded or is it generally better to have an instrument mic that is built for such things?

also, if i use a vocal mic for amps, will i risk blowing out the mics diaphram or whatever it's called?

Only if you point it straight into the speaker cone. And even then probably not. The best advice is to try it. I hae never been a fan of the 58 on guitar amp, but someone last night posted he had heard that it was great. I personally think it misses some of what a 57 will pick up with ease.

wouldnt recommend that...dunno how true that one is - the mesh protects the mic if nothing else...
