Noob needs help with stereo mic recording

I'm looking to get a small home recording setup for my PC. I want to buy an audio interface that I can use to record using my condenser mic and/or a guitar. Also want to get a MIDI controller to use with software synth like Reason.

I already own a good electret condenser mic (Sony ECM-MS957 with battery power so doesn't need phantom) BUT it's a stereo mic. The cable that comes with the mic (5 pin) ends in a 1/8" stereo miniplug - i.e. for use with minidisc recorders etc). If I buy something like the E-MU 0404 USB interface, is it possible to convert this mic so it can be plugged into the XLR mic inputs or do I specifically need an interface with 1/8" stereo mic input?

The only cheap interface I can find with this stereo mic input is the M-Audio MOBILE PRE but it has no MIDI i/o!!!! Also, will the stereo mic input on this interface send the signal through the pre-amps?

Any ideas?

Good question. I've used a Sony ECM mic in the past with my minidisk, and although it plugs into the MD and works, I'm not sure if the MD is containing a preamp or is the mic boosting it.

Thinking, I'm gonna guess that there's a preamp in the MD, though that's just a guess.

I'm basing this guess on the fact that there's gain adjustment on the MD devices, so I'm gonna say that's in the preamp circuit.

If this is the case, then you should be able to use an adapter of some sort that converts 1/8" stereo to xlr somehow.

If it were me, I'd build one, but you may not be looking to do that.

Here's something close:

and something else closer:

couldn't find a male xlr version, but they're probably out there. Just have to look harder, i guess.

I'd think you'd need a gender bender too, to go from 1/8" male to 1/8" female.

Or find a converter that's got all the right ends.

Should work, though.

Cheers for the advice pjk - I'm pretty sure you're right that there's a preamp in the MD!
I've looked into adapters and they seem to be available out there but might be a bit tough to get my hands on here in South Africa. Also, it kinda sucks that this mic will be using up both my preamps so I won't be able to record vocals and guitar simultaneously.
Although I've heard this mic is a good one for recording instruments, I think I might save some hassle - sell it and get myself something like a Shure SM-57.

They have converters for 1/4" and XLR. Pretty slick.
