New iPods

As mentioned elsewhere we have all new iPods today.

I'm a huge iPod fan but there's nothing here to force my hand into my wallet. I currently have a 5g video pod 60g.

The new nano's are pretty cool but also rather ugly and square compared to the old one. Engadget says they are much better in person but still only 8gig & 16gig.

iPod Classic with 80gig and 160gig is cool but nothing new really other than massive drives.

iPod Touch is cool but I don't find it practical. Since I get most of my videos from torrent sites I couldn't face all the conversions and the screen is smaller than on my Archos 504 I use for video stuff. Wireless is cool but not a deal winner. 8 and 16gig is once again the deal breaker for me, I realize it has to be flash and that it's not practical to have larger but that doesn't change the fact that I have 50gig of music and videos on my iPod and couldn't live any other way :)

A good set of upgrades but nothing mind blowing for me

My motorola Q is all I ever use :P

Considered the iPhone, then I saw the pricetag. Oh and I'm a loyal VZW customer.

the touchscreen ipod is only 8 and 16 gig? for real? why is that? why's it have to be flash? i like the wireless idea, but i won't buy another ipod until an 80 gig touch model comes out.

my ipod was a christmas bonus from work (studio/dupe)...i had that mofo plugged into my head every day for almost a year....i dig it, and i've grown an ever-expanding love for podcaster's. but i know a much simpler, and cheaper device is out there that will do the same thing, only more intuitively, AND for a cheaper price, than the good folks at Apple figured we'd like.

on that note, i havn't touched my ipod (40G vid) in two months....not on the account i don't like it...but i had it's original "home base" computer replaced by another....and now i can't figure out how to transfer files (that would USUALLY be as easy as copy/paste or drag n drop)....i just can't fathom why they wouldn't allow such an option.

You can get software that will allow drag and drop to iPod, but it is an oddly missing thing.

It has to be flash based to keep it tiny, have no moving parts and to have workable battery life. Just stating the facts.

As mentioned I bought an Archos 504 for watching videos, it has a 4.3 inch screen. It has problems but being able to download stuff or transfer DVD's and play them with no conversion is a major selling point. The TouchPod looks great but all that converting would be too much for me.

My iPod Nano 2Gb lives its life in the glove box of my truck. I have a direct connect cable that plugs it into my stereo and I can drive it via my stereo face. So its basically a hard drive for my car stereo. All I could ask for is more space. Video isn't really a concern for me, although I could see how it would be cool. But I have little to no opportunity to watch portable video anyways.

wyd, there are a few options for the transfer software you want. sharepod is a small, free program that you install on the ipod itself and it works flawlessly and very quickly. it spits out mp3 copies back to your computer in a flash.

tonyoci, i'm not sure what you mean. my 80g is hard drive based. did they not go that route here with the new touch model because flash leads to quicker and smoother menus or something? that would be important for the touch screen.
