I've Put Together My First Song and Would Like Your Opinions.

I used to be Swappo, by the way.

The song is in my profile. I just stuck to presets since I don't understand this jazz. I don't even understand what I did to get the song where it is. There's plenty of Noob mistakes like background noise of me bumping the mic and stuff. I wasn't sure how to clean that up. I know there's major clipping which you'll all shake your head at. It's okay. All I DO know is that I DON'T know what I'm doing.

I think overall it sucks, but I want to learn.

What do you guys think I could do to make it sound better?

Heck, I didn't think it was nearly as bad as you apparently do. Granted, I listened on a little BIM ThinkPad with **** speakers, but I like where the vocals sat in the mix, heard a couple little oops's but not a lot.

I'd say it's a successful first attempt.

When it comes to clipping and mic bumping and stuff, don't think about fixing it, just re-record it. Some things are not worth the time fixing and are quicker and easier to just re-do.

Why the new account? What was wrong with Swappo?

Sorry about posting in the wrong forum.

I forgot my password for the Swappo account and for the email account I signed up with, so I started this one.

Thanks for the feedback. What were some of the "oopses" you heard?

I recorded this song before I bought the Lexicon Pro. This was done with the mic plugged directly into the pc. I still had the crappy Realtek sound card at that time, as well. I amplified the vocals with a 10db boost.

Wow, that was pretty neat. I haven't heard stuff like that in quite awhile, specially in a home recording environment.

I'm guessing the music was canned.

Vocals, I'm gonna throw out there that a few of the transitions up to a new key may have been a little loose, but not by much.

Probably not enough to worry about.

Recording was pretty decent (on my PC speakers). I agree with dB, don't sweat the small stuff, because if you're just getting started, then this is a great start.

Just keep moving, and the little issues will fall away on their own.

Two things that will move you right up into great recordings: passion & patience.

Sounds like you got the first, don't overlook the second =).

Very nice job.

Thanks so much.

There's a couple flat notes in there that are bugging me. I'm gonna tweak those a little. Maybe play around with some other stuff and then move on to another song.

A small pie will soon be eaten

Great voice mate! Really great!

Definately looking forward to hearing some more stuff.

I can't really add much more to that :)

Hey man, are you actually Jerry Vale under an assumed name? That was fine! Makes me want to dust off some of my old LPs..

I dug it! Don't sell yerself short.

Bleak; thank you, my friend. I look forward to posting more songs here.

Herb, if you're going to accuse me of being someone else could you at least pick someone better looking than Jerry Vale?

Being Italian I shouldn't say that since Jerry is so popular with those of us that have lots of vowels in our names. I may get my membership revoked. Then again, I never did like polenta, so I already have some 'splaining to do.

Dude! I'm with Herb on this one, I can hear it as well. I think you did a very good job with that tune for sure. I am an old school jazz freak so your in good company between Herb, Walt, myself and a few others who know these tunes. I think the mix worked out pretty well really.

My only thing would to possibly add the tiniest bit of reverb to the vocal as it is just a tad dry sounding. And that is OK as well, but if you want it to blend in just a tiny bit better, try a small room reverb and only mix it in the slightest bit to settle the vocal in a little.

Otherwise that is a spot on rendition of that tune and your voice fits very well. I'll be listening to this one and its going in the playlist pronto.

Thanks, Noize. Dry is exactly the word I was looking for. The vocal is already reverbed. I'll try a little more.

That was great ! I grew up on Frank and Dean so that was great to hear!

I think you nailed the vocal production spot on. You dont want to produce a vocal track that seems like it wasnt done in the same room with the backing music. I wouldnt make too many decisions on what you slap effects wise on it in a soloing mode. I would make every decision listening to the whole and how its fitting in. Only solo it to look for renegade freq to notch out. I only heard a little concern in the 12K area (the simblance area) that may need a little notched out. Otherwise great job!

Joey, like I said. It only need the tiniest bit of reverb to blend it in ever so slightly. So add it sparingly and listen until it sounds as rob stated like it was all done in the same room.

I added probably more than you would, but I like the way it sounds. I think it blends nicely now.

I'll put it this way. We had 3 or 4 vocalists with the big band, and the vox on that recording blows them away. You could definately be giging with them right now.

Thanks, Walt. And thanks to robbue, olddog and everyone else that had kind words on this thread. I appreciate all the sentiments.
