So, what's Flame been doing all year?

Its been buging me lately that, although I'm often lurking about and checking out threads I dont log in and post as much as I should.

By way of explaination, I figured I'd share a bit of what I've been doing for the last year or so that has eaten all my time.

First up, last September I started my own company, producing music and ringtones, and quit the rat race. The company has almost killed me in trying to get it off the ground - even hearing form other people how much work is involved isnt preparation enough for how much work it ACTUALLY takes to try and launch a firm. But, close to the companies first borthday we're taking decent money, got a handful of very good customers (and a bunch of occasional ones) and the future looks, if not bright, at least not as wobbly as it did at first. I'm very proud that when initial investments fell through and people pulled out/messed us around we managed to run for a whole year on half the money I thought we'd need, and make three times more that I thought we would. Still not enough to retire to the Bahamas, but wnough to let me buy food now and then!

Once the company started to level out a little, I started a sub-company, Ordio Records. Basically a hobby supported by the business that'll break even at best, Ordio Records will be releasing a few albums and EPs and will be very net-centric. Lots of free downloads and free content to download, with CDs and tees to buy if you really love something that you hear. To date, theres just two artists, me and one more, but you can check out the site here if you're interested: www.ordiorecords.com

I'm excited to be recording with a good friend and taleted songwriter, and Ordio will be putting out his first EP before Christmas, with any luck. Well, if I ever finish the production work anyway!

You can check out a little of the recording process behind this release (in a tongue in cheek manner) here:

www.ordiorecords.com/news.php?id=11&s_id=1

That's my arm and voice making an occasional cameo there...

Oh yeah, there's a song here too, if you wanna actually hear some music: www.myspace.com/supereightshoes

Anyway, be assured that I'm alays lurking about, just maybe not as vocal as I used to be. Still love this place!

It's good to 'see' you Flame and great to hear you've been kickin some butt. To have any 'take home' funds in a year is phonominal. I've been in the control tower of two start-ups so far and they are a birtch! I wouldn't personaly attempt it in the music industry, but that's just me.

This statement is probably going to go over here like a turd in a punch bowl, but.. I can understand some of the producer's frustration. So many groups play music that listeners just don't like that much. Per their 'art' they are not about to produce anything 'for the public'. That's like the guy going to work and refusing to honor the specifications of the product. They fully anticipate that a producer will fund the activities that make them feel good. It is true these abmonolities exist, case in point, Paris HillHoe, the traveling freak show. But for the other 99.9% of us people just don't give money away for things they don't like.

Are you talking about a specific producer Walt, or just producers in general?

the old version of a producer as a collaborator is evolving to everyone producing themselves there is less of a 'team effort' when making a really fine album....there was/are literally upwards of 1000 people involved in the final product....now more often that number is averaging under a 100.

less people equals less opinions....i havn't heard a "masterpiece" album come out all that often here in the past 10 years....they used to spit them out back in the day.

my turd doesn't smell as bad as Walt's. hehe

on that note, congrats indeed! it's quite an uplifting thing doing something you love and getting paid for it....i'm just a freelance audio 'jack of most trades, master of none'. these days, freelancing at it's finest....i'm scoring a regular audio gig on weekends as a house soundguy (we're workin' on the acquisition of the equipment, which i get to voice my opinion on *FUN factor*)

my other company i was workin' with (studio/print/dupe) i had a client buy the whole frickin' studio!! which i got an all expense paid trip to go to indiana to hook it all back up....that was kinda fun....but i got bored with workin' at a musical 'kinkos'. kinda lost interest and am workin' at the local tavern....i'm actually making more money now, AND i don't have to be up until 4pm! is veddy good deal.

good to hear form ya man.

And so it does Mr. WYD! Your a stich. Lookin back at my post, me thinks there's an OoooPs there. I didn't mean to throw a twist on the thread. Truly just glad to see your makin progress there Flame!

I'm back to being able to use my studio as a 'no money involved' entity. I like it like that when I can afford to do so. I've got a women I'm workin with that is a very sharp musician and is populating her band with same. The results so are are the most impressive I have produced in this studio to date.

flame, its a good looking nicely laid out site. Nice music by the way. I'm liken the supereightshoes for sure. I like the tune on myspace for sure. That is a very cool sound you are getting. You can hear the room so well. I liked the video using the old tape machine and microphone.

Sounds like you are getting things rolling nicely.

The room we recorded in is gorgeous, I think. We did five or 6 songs in there just like that one, though we're probably only gonna use a couple of them. The little song we're recording in that video has a lyric that goes 'and the rain comes down, and the rain comes down' and just as we were doing a take of that it started raining and thunder rumbled just at the right moment - pretty spooky!

As for the recording, we used my Macbook, an SM57 for the vocal and a cheapo condenser on the guitar with alittle crossover between the two - with pretty much no processing save a little eq and compression

So you didn't actually record to the tape machine in the video?? I didn't get to hear the whole thing, I'll have to go have a listen again.

But ya, I wanna hear more from that room. It is killer for sure.

Yeah, we recorded a little bit to tape, but the track on the Myspace is recorded to Mac. That old reel to reel is so crackly that itd be a bit TOO lofi to make a whole listenable EP
