Thinking about a DAW...

Yep... finally ditching the old 4-track!

Here's what I have:

12 chanel mixer
Dell Dimension 4300
Various mics and stuff
Etc, etc...

I want to be able to record at least 8 tracks at a time... possibly 12.

So I guess what I really need is a sound card and a multi-track app. I was thinking maybe the Delta 1010... and I have no idea about a multi-tracking app. Something simple, without a lot of whistles and bells.

At present, I only own an assortment of SM 57's, and since I'm recording a lot of live drums, I also need some drum mics. I saw a nice little package on musician's friend... ( service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear ); however it's made by Nady and I'm a bit skeptical of the quality of their gear... would I be better off just buying a shure kick drum mic and 2 condensers?

We also need an EQ unit for our live rig... any sugestions for something around $100?

You could save yourself a lot of money and get a more efficient plan for drums. What a lot of peeps like us do (poor bastards with no $) is mix all the drums down to a stereo image, then just record the drums on 2 tracks, sometimes 3 if you want to isolate the kick or snare...it would save inputs needed, therefore save money on the card you need to buy...

Just a thought.

Simple app, with some beels and whistles...

www.intuitivemx.com/ ;-) $150

Or Acid pro 4 bundle at MF for $149...best bargain in town at the moment. You get Acid, Studio version of Sound Forge and some other doo-dads and gizmos...it's a steal of a deal, seriously.

Well... the sound card is going to be a birthday present from the always wonderful grandparents, so the $ isn't the issue on that one (thankfully). What I'm mostly concerned about is if the Delta will work for what I want to do... and largly the drum mic situation...

Hey dude.

Well, seeing as how you have an assortment of SM58's, that's your Toms and Snare Mic'd already. As a result all you are going to need is Kick Drum Mic (I use the AKG D112) and two matched Condensor Mic's to use as overheads (the more you can spend, the better - but I would reccomend two AKG C1000S' - these are great when used for overhead situations and don't sound all that bad on acousitc instruments either. I would get the condensor's first as the two overhead mic's will be the most important in getting a quality drum sound. Also note that it is actually quite possible to get a good kick drum sound using an SM58 believe it or not ;)

As for the Soundcard - yep, the Delta1010 will do everything you ever dreamed of and then a bit more (in the terms of Audio work that is!) As you probably know, I bleet on about my 410's constantly and the 1010 is the big daddy of them :)

On a final note - see if you can track down a copy of Vegas by Sonic Foundary - I learnt DAW techniques on that and still use it for projects sometimes now (as does dB - so it can't be bad! :)

jues.

Thanks. I was definatly thinking I didn't really need all those drum mics... just the kick and 2 overheads. Oh and just a correction, I have SM57's, not 58's...
