hi guys first post here!!!
I am looking to buy a usb or firewire mixer. I will mainly use it for onsite recording, mostly for recording audio for documentaries, interviews and sometimes the odd bands that I mix for friends.
I don't care too much for the strip EQ and built in FX as I use a 31 band stereo EQ and parametric EQ more then likely both will be as inserts. The reason why I need to connect to my comp is I want to record digital on my laptop I use Soundforge to edit and cubse and acid for multitracking
now I heard that USB can't record more then 2 tracks at one
I also have a Edirol Fa-66

Any comments would be appreciated

Thanks

sorry, i'm drunk, but what's your question? are you lookin' for a better interface?

if you don't hafta record more than two tracks at a time, then i'd hafta ask...

1. what's your budget?

2. how important is 'quality' to you?

you can easily spend more than a grand on a good quality two channel interface, but if you're podcasting or whatever, there's much cheaper options.

I just want to know witch one of the 2 is better quality is very important but all I need in the I/O to be clean. Since I won't be using any of the onboard effects I am not to concern about that but I'd like to put all the tracks to digital right away on my laptop.

I dunno if you are still checking this but have you thought about a firepod from presonus? It fits in a rack for safe and easy portability, its 8 channels through firewire and it has a nice monitoring section. What youre describing you need sounds to me like the firepod.

I've been using a Multimix 16FW for about a year. I can't speak for how harmoniously it works on a Mac or with other software, but I use Windows Xp and Sonar. For my purposes, it gets me there; I rarely have to track more than 2 channels at once, but once I got it tweaked, I tested it and was able to record 16 channels simultaneously for a half-hour straight without any glitches. ASIO4ALL was an absolute must; I could never get this unit to work with WDM. You'll have to experiment a lot with ASIO4ALL's latency settings, and if you do Alesis' firmware update, you may find yourself rolling it back to get it to work. Sometimes, you may also find that not all of the input channels are available to your application; something funky in the driver. I wouldn't think of using this setup for live multitracking with a lot of parts. I also noticed that if it gets too hot (after perhaps an hour and a half of continuous use), the firewire interface will shut down.

I'm getting ready to upgrade to a Phonic Helix board.

So it seems that firewire would be better then USB!!!!

Yep, the real decision is if you need more then 2 tracks to be recorded at once. USB will only do 2 tracks at once using ASIO were as firewire can do multiple tracks such 8 or more at once.

But as dB stated, the speed of both is very equal at the moment.
