Mastering programs advantages

Are there any advantages to bouncing a stereo mix out of Pro Tools and importing it into another program for mastering? Can you effectively master stuff in Pro Tools? What are some good programs people use for mastering songs? Any recommendations?

Har-Bal and WaveLab with a few plugs, thats what I master with...Har-Bal has seriously limited the time I spend in WaveLab though...

Yes, it pays off, once you are mastering, it's not only about making a song sound it's best, it's about making the compilation of songs sound their best...and making the compilation sound like a full project...not just a bunch of songs slapped together...

can you use any Waves plugins with Har-bal or Wavelab, such as TrueVerb, L1 Maximizer, Q10 par-eq, etc?

WaveLab, yes, Har-Bal is a standalone app, no plugs available or anything. L1 and the Parametrics from Waves are my main plugs.

Ive done alot of mastering in the sequencer (DP) using waves plugins and the like (particularly the L2 and the renaissance eqs). I think theres definitely value in bringing your final bounced mixes into an editor to check levels, etc, whether you do the bulk of your mastering there or not is inconsequential, just that you double check for reference levels after you've bounced out of the sequencer before you burn to CD.

Of course, if you're working on a serious project that you intend to get pressed or any good stuff like that, I *highly* recommend using an outside mastering engineer. I just wrote a big blurb on my thoughts on the matter on my blog: homestudiograbbag.blogspot.com/ but i think you'll find plenty of people out there touting the benefits similarly. I mastered my own stuff for a long time and after one time going to a mastering engineer I dont think ill ever do it myself again for a serious project.
