audiophile 2496 recording question

So I got my new soundcard and a couple of adapters so I can record line-in through the RCA ports which is working fine, but I have a couple problems.

First off, I wanted to (temporarily) use my computer mic to continue to record ideas that I had until I find what mic and mixed I want to get. However, when I try to record with it through line-in, it just pick up anything, so I don't know how to go about using it, or if it's even possible. When I recorded with my onboard soundcard I just plugged it into the 1/8" mic port.

Also, when I used to record line-in with my guitar or keyboard or whatever, my speakers acted as an amplifier and whatever I played into the computer came out through the speakers, whether I was recording or not. Now with my new sound card, I can't hear anything when I'm playing, only when I play back the recording. With my electric guitar it's ok cause the strings are still vibrating and I can hear what it sounds like to an extent, but of course with my keyboard I hear nothing except the clicking of the keys. Is there any way around this?

Mic issue:

You won't get far with any mic going directly into a soundcard's line ins. You'll need a preamp- either standalone or built in to a mixer. But then you'll almost certainly have trouble getting your computer mic hooked up. Typically preamps only accept XLR inputs.

I'd say your best bet for now is to just switch back to the built-in sound card and use that until you can figure out what mic/mic-pre setup you're gonna use.

I'm also a 24/96 user. My setup consists of a 2ch mic pre going directly into the audiophile. That way I have a solid front end into the card which allows me to get equally solid signals. No mixer required!

Monitoring Issue:

Open MAudio control panel
Select 'Patchbay/Router' tab
Select 'Monitor Mixer' under the H/W Out 1/2 column

can you recommend a decent cheap mixer/preamp to get me started? I know I'm going to order an SM57 here soon, but as for mixers I'm not so sure. I've seen Behringer ones for as low as $70, but I don't know if they're really worth anything...I could probably do up to $150 at this point

I like Behringer mixers, for the money, great deal...not the best mixer, but great for the price, beating most anything else in it's price point in my opinion.

get it here www.zzounds.com...em--BEHXENTX802

It's one of the newest, bestest series from Behry...I had a UB series Behry for a few years and it rocked...

Personally, not a huge fan of Alesis for anything but amps or other relatively non-interactive type gear...

any reason i should get it from zzounds instead of amazon? i would lean towards amazon just because all of my information is already there and I don't have to enter anything.

HRC recieves commission from sales through zzounds.

I would actually opt to save up another 30 bucks and go for this one: www.zzounds.com...m--BEHXENYX1202

That way you'll have a couple extra inputs if you need them.

Another benefit from going the mixer route is that you could run the outs from the audiophile to the tape ins of the mixer and then the speakers/monitors out of the mixer. That would put more control at your fingertips.

or, buy thru amazon with this link www.amazon.com/gp/redirec...p;creative=9325

:-)

Good reason to buy with amazon though, it is easier if you have an account...personally, I just like buying gear from a gear company...

alright, i think i'll just get the $60 one cause I don't think i need that many inputs. will I need to get a special cable to plug it into my RCA ports on my soundcard though, or does it come with what i need?
