Need Help With Getting MIDI Files To Work On Keyboard

Hi. I recently bought a Yamaha DGX-620 Keyboard and it came with a bunch of MIDI files in Standard Midi Format which can be used on the keyboard. On the keyboard you can see the notation if you use them as lessons. I was wondering as to how one could make their own MIDI files which would do the same thing. I want to be able to see the tracks on the keyboard's display and be able to play along with those tracks. Thanks for the help.

If it can do it, the manual should have a section on how to record a midi track and play it back so you can play along with it. I could not see anything on it being able to do it on the info page for it at Yamaha. Did the salesman tell you it could do that? If so I would go see him and have him give you a demo of how to do it. Sorry I'm not more help on that one.

Hey,

No. No one told me that it could do that. I merely assumed that since there are MIDI files available that you can play along with, there should be some way to make them yourself.

I would check the manual and see if there is something that covers it in there. One thing you can look for is if there is a record button on the keyboard itself. That would tell you right off if it can do it or not.

I've checked the manual but it proved fruitless. The keyboard does have a record feature and one can record performances but the thing I was looking for was if anyone knew if there was software to write music, export into a compatible format, and use like the MIDI files that Yamaha provides.

Well recording into software on a PC and seeing it on the keyboards display is not going to happen. You can however use the keyboard as both a midi controller and as a sound module for the midi files to play back on from the PC. Or simply send them from the PC to the keyboard.

Are you looking for a free type program to do this with or something with a few more bells and whistle's?

Doesn't matter to me. If the software proves worthy, then I would buy it but I need it to do pretty specific stuff. Basically, I need it to make the files usable with the lessons feature of the keyboard. If it can't do that, then it's no better than Finale or Sibelius. They're great programs for composition and I can view the scores of the MIDIs I create on the keyboard. But they still don't work with the lesson feature.

Well Finale and Sibelius should be able to export a type 0 or type 1 midi file which is what the keybaord should be reading for midi files. If they have a different format you won't find anything from anywhere except Yamaha for that.

Try this, music.yamaha.com/products...?productId=1206 as it appears it is the proprietary software loader for that keyboard. It will allow you to transfer files back and forth from the PC to the keyboard. I'm not sure what format it uses as it does not say exactly on their page, but that should do the trick.
