Being a long time musician but not in the recording area.
I am thinking about taking this class:
www.berkleemusic.com/scho...usic_production
Any thoughts?..think it will give me a good start?
Anyone know about this school?
Thanks
Jack

I dunno about the class, but anyone that offers a class that is not based around ProTools is OK in my book!

If it involves David Mash then odds are good it will be a fairly good class. He is a well respected teacher and fronted the music synthesis program that is now at Berklee. He was a pioneer for teaching electronic music creation. I have met him a couple of times dong various work for studio's in CA and he is very well respected.

The course is as dB stated probably very good due to not pushing the PT thing. It will probably dive into real world PC recording techniques.

I'm looking at the berkleemusic.com production courses too. Just curious as to why a non-PT based curriculum is ideal?

In my research it looks like most programs at berkleemusic involve PT classes but aren't exclusively PT derived...

They are one of the few schools that do not push PT as the be all end all, one and only true studio recording software.

Which is always a breath of fresh air.

Not that it is ideal, just the fact that it is offered. I would rather spend my money on mics and pre's vs. mp3 codecs and plugins.

Good point Tripps.

Even though PT is now bundling some goodies with their software to try and compete they are still way over priced for what you actually get. And as you stated, adding the simple things like an mp3 encoder which is standard with all the others but cost near $100 to add it to PT. That is a deciding factor for many these days.

if i may...does mechanical or electronic engineering help in audio production at a later stage or is it just useless crap?

I tune down down...

PT is no better and no worse in the reality of all things. Except! For the limitations they impose by trying to squeeze every dime out of your ***.

Given, that if I had the opportunity to use ANY DAW on a more than efficient PC/Mac, I would chose PT because of their routing capabilities. (Which, I hear Logic 8 has the same style now.) But, if I were building a system for my use and wanted to save money so I could have a lower cost for my clientele, I'd go with anything BUT PT... Just cause of their price and functionality ratio just don't match at a Blue Collar level.

With all that jargon... I know a guy that took some Berklee classes (at the school, not online.) And *HE* said they were intense and that he learned a lot... But, he wasn't exactly the brightest taco in the toolshed.

Great info guys thanks for being so helpful. I just signed up for Berkleemusic.com's Studio Producer Professional Certificate. I'll report back and let you guys know what it's like. I'll be studying some PT, and some Reason, and then some generic mixing/mastering techniques along with a few other courses. I'm new to PT and Reason, as all my recordings to date have been using Acid 2.0 and a little 6.0. I just built a PC studio around PT M-Powered 7.4 with the ever so popular ProjectMix I/O. When I get home tonight I'm going to post in Gear Gab and show off my new stuff ;).

If anyone else is interested in the cert I have done my research and could probably answer any questions related to enrollment/coursework etc.

Cool, the info would be great if anyone needs it. I know there are a few from time to time that ask about schools like that.

I'll have to scoot over the
GG and check out your gear for sure.
