Pretty good read, and yeah, he's pissed, but he kinda lost me with

I steal music too, I'm not gonna say I don't. But it's tough not to resent people for doing it when you're the guy making the music, that would like to reap a benefit from that.

But other than that, I totally see where he's coming from...build up a good fan base that your label can bend over a table and ^#%$

It'll be interesting to see what he come up with two albums from now when he's indie.

A guy in my local film makers group made a video for Hurt.

I read a review with him while he was still in Australia and he was indeed pissed. And honestly I don't blame him at all. The stealing music thing is kind of a joke with him. Everyone knows he gives away a ton of his music for free. And as we have seen in another thread a month or so ago, he even goes as far as letting fans download and remix his work. Not a bad way to make up for the fact his record company rips the fans off. I don't buy his stuff in a store, I always order it direct off the site. And I will be glad when he goes indy, it will allow him more freedom to do exactly what he wants and I am sure he will do exactly what he said. Keep it at a reasonable price. He was a big advocate of trying to fight the Ticket Master rip off and still fights that fight.

Having been through the grinder playing in bands on a major record label I have seen first hand the way a record company rips off an artist. But to do it to a completely established artist is suicide for them. In the end it will all work out, but it will also take its toll on those who have to go that route.

Just plain ugly. Everybody is busy trying to out 'rip off' everybody else and at the end of the day the person they have screwed is themselves.

It's the trendy thing to do!

Yes, I think that we will be seeing more like Trent who will go their own way and still survive. People like Bowie, Reznor and many others would do just fine all on their own. I know many independent artist's who are making a decent living without the assistance of some big record label.

Didn't Prince do this years ago? Trent isn't really trying something new...though he's high profile enough where maybe it could make a statement. Prince was already on his way out when he did it.

Yep, but prince did it more for the reason he didn't care for the label telling him what he should record. It wasn't so much the battle of them ripping of the consumer, although part of it was. He has however released about 10 albums of his own work now on his own label and they have done pretty well. Although it is not the Prince music of the 80's anymore, it is more funkified and jazz type stuff.

He has also produced and released other artists on that label as well. Can't say that I follow any of them though.
