URGENT GUITAR QUESTION

Disaster,my strats gone weird! On five position p/up switch, neck and next position ok but other three settings gone tinny/trebley.The neck p/up is a Dimazio, the other two are original but one has been rewound about 8 years ago.I had the five way switch fitted decades ago cos when I bought it someone had fitted three separate switches for the p/ups giving it that extra sound front and back switches on, which was a nice sound but too fiddly for quick changes.Any ideas?

There a capacitor on the treble circuit inside the guitar guts. Maybe that one went bad.

(i'm totally guessing here, as I've not gone into strat guts before.)

Here's a page on wiring for strat, though it is for stock strat.

www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/stockstrat.php

Otherwise, maybe one of the tone controls went funny, and only passes one value, instead of changing when moving around.

I'd get some electronic cleaner first, open up the pickguard, and clean all moving parts first. Like the pots, and the blade switch.

If that doesn't help, I'd replace the capacitor.

oh yeah, i'm assuming no wires dropped off their solder connections. That's a visual inspection type thing.

Possibly, a solder joint went bad (corrosion building up, and breaking a connection), maybe re-flowing the solder joints, if you're inclined to solder.

ya know, it could just be a shorting toggle switch or loose connection there...always start at the simplest...

Haven't we all learned to first look at the cheapest parts...it's usually a bad cable :-)

The guy doing the repair used to work for Gordon Smith who has a good reputation in UK.They are the same peeps that did the re-fin in the early 70s.The last remaining tone/pot looked like a Dinky toy car thats been left in the garden for 45 years so he fitted a new one.Got it plugged in and still wasn't right so took it back.Turns out the middle pick/up has thrown in the towel:( Getting it re-wound with a few extra winds:)
