I have a newbie questions on the EMU 1212m

I thinking of getting this card and using it with Adobe audition and N-Track. I had been recording using a SB Live and am looking for expansion and better sound quality. Here are the things I want to do:

1. Record Guitar and vocals on discrete tracks. Both are first going through a AudioBuddy Pre-Amp.

2. Use external sound processors through the aux send. This way I can tweak the processors after I've recorded the track or take the effect out altogether if I don't like how it's mixing. Does this go through the SPDIF or can it go through one of the monoinputs.

3. Do you use the mixer in the PatchMix software over the mixer in the recording software (Audition or N-track)? Is the PatchMix mixer just for playback? Do you use them both?

I'm sure I'll have more questions later, but thanks in advance.

Greg

If you are buying that Emu unit because it states it has 12 inputs and 12 outputs, don't. It can only use one of the said input functions at a time. So you either will get 2 channels of analog i/o, 2 channels of s/pdif i/o or 8 channels of ADAT optical i/o. Emu was a great company when all they did was build synths. Since teaming up with Creative Labs, (in other words SoundBlaster) they have turned to junk.

The drivers for their interfaces are very hard to get set up to function well and are very finicky when they do work. The PatchMix interface is a bear to try and navigate. Although there are a couple of users here who have mastered it, they do have backgrounds give them an advantage to using complicated software. The instructions provided by Emu are bare minimum and are almost no help in getting it running at all.

If you are looking for a simple 2 channel interface there are many out there that will do the job much better and run much more stable than the Emu unit.

Also, you do know that you can use the DSP effects in your Adobe and N-Track without having to leave the digital world exactly as you described? Try them before committing them to the track.

Uh, at least one more time . . .

With all due respect, I have to disagree with Noize2u about the 1212m (and the 0404, it's cousin). The 1212m is advertised with 2/2 in/out
set-up; I'm not sure where Greg got the idea that the card could in-out more than that (if indeed he had that idea at all).
I've had the 0404 for almost a year, and have had no problems at all, and without any specialized knowledge I have been able to set-up and run Patch Mix. I did find out accidentally that (at least with my Dell) Patch Mix should not be run at startup; get the computer up and running and then start Patch Mix. Every once in a while Patch Mix simply wouldn't output, and I had to restart it, but now it works fine.
I can actually output and input four signals simultaneously, as they state in the somewhat lengthy manual. Two on regular analogue, and two on optical or S/PDIF. Unfortunately, My Boss
br-532 only outputs in 44.1, and I think this is why that signal sounds odd, so I don't use it. The thing is though, the 0404 can do it, and I think the 1212m is the same in this respect.
Greg Harris, if you want 10 in and 10 out, you might look into the 1010. Its been my happy experience, though, that these cards and their attendant controlling software work fine.
I found this site after I bought my card:
