let's have a contest.

tonometric.com/adaptivepitch/

my results: i scored in the 97.5th percentile in adaptive pitch. i can discriminate (at 500 hertz) between two tones that are .375 hertz apart. what annoys me is that i think i can score 100 percent on this. i only missed three. i will probably take it again later.

the other tests are 'tone deaf' (which is actually short term memory) and 'rhythm.' rhythm seems like it would be very hard.

72% on rythem

I've been drumming for about 15 years.

On a side note... I have never heard so many renditions of the amen break in one place...

zek, there's a cool history of the amen break video on youtube. it's not much to look at, but it's pretty interesting to listen to.

eff this, i'm taking this again later. I only scored in the 42% and I know i could get them all correct. I wasn't paying full atention cuz I was at work and just started clicking buttons a couple times. If i concentrate I'll get them all right!

i took it a few more times last night but didnt get them all right. i was conscious of second-guessing myself, something i did not do the first time i took the test. whatever i was doing the first time worked. i also had a few beers. i guess i'll try one more time, but it gets really hard for me just below .375 hertz

forty, I'm up there near you. Which indeed surprises me to say the least. But as I took it a couple more times the score fell off slightly. In the Tone deaf test I passed with flying colors, mostly due to being able to memorize the first melody and distinguish the difference between the too. That was pretty easy. The rhythm thing I only scored a little above the 85 percentile. I will however try it again a couple times to see. I'm gonna get the boyz to try this as well and see how they fair with their young ears.

i didnt do so well in the tone deaf test. it purely measures short term memory, anyway, not tone deafness. i got 82% in that test, which is not what i'm really capable of. i wasnt' sure whether to listen to the bass side of things or not. i listen holistically. i thought every little possible deviation meant 'different' even if it came in the keypress intensity or fingernoise or whatever the heck that stuff is. cause thats what happens if you just kind of sit there and absorb it.

is it just the melody which varies?

Ya, it is pretty much just the melody. Although it did catch me off guard on the very first one. I kind of jumped the gun. It seems as though it for the most part is only changing one note, possibly two. I do however agree that there seems to be slight variations in the tone at times, not pitch just the timbre itself.

But I did try to listen as simply as possible without looking for too much detail. That I think helped a great deal.

Kind of a cool tool really.

Sweet Rob, your up at the top then. That is an odd test, but seems to tell the tale.
