Sheet Music Software?

My wife is looking for a program that converts piano notes to sheet music. Anybody have any experience with this, and which are the best programs to look into? If it involves MIDI, I'll need counseling on that too, as I have zero experience with it.

Any suggestions? Thanx in advance.

I like Finale Notepad. Just have a piano roll, an as you play it write out the score. Most daw software has a feature similar to this as well...

A buddy of mine that does a lot of this stuff uses Finale as well...I can\'t say I know a lot of the abilities and/or limitations of the app itself, but I know I have heard him mention that name a lot.

Is Finale a MIDI app, or does it work with regular audio?

What a coincidence! The day I find this forum, I have some good news to share!

A very feature filled midi composition software is FREE today from: www.giveawayoftheday.com/

(no i don't work for them! ;) )

Theres a new piece of retail software every day (sometimes junk.....)

The rule is, you have till midnight 4-14-07 to download and install!

It has some cool editing features, and it was easier for me to pick up than cakewalk's interface!

now to compose......

OK, here goes my credibility as a smart guy. How do I hook up MIDI to the PC? Her keyboard has a MIDI out. I suppose I need a MIDI card? Or is it USB?

sometimes, if your PC has a joystick port you can get a cable that will adapt the MIDI DIN cable to a joystick cable..

Excuse my lack of astuteness, but I'm used to working with real musical instruments. I'll figure it out, thanks.

Love is a many splintered thing.

Okay you two kiss and make up. :-)

Herb, yep that should do it. Be careful though as some of them rely on Windows USB codec and don't always play nice with the generic USB drivers in windows. Although I guess I should have read a little bit at the top. It does have its own drivers.

You might want to look at the M-Audio Uno as well for the money.

And indeed, I'm not sure I should be helping a MIDI skeptic! So your saying I'm not playing REAL musical instruments. Do you have any idea what it takes to make a convincing string or horn sound pounding on a keyboard? How about a convincing guitar part. And my god, the investment in dollars and time I have made in all those samples and synths, not real. I feel so jaded now. In fact, I am close to tears now, I think I'll go and drown my sorrows in a bottle of Jim Beam.

Calm down now. No one will come to blows. And of course, dB would kick my all-over-the-political-spectrum *** anyway.

Never was a MIDI skeptic. That was just a playful jab back to dB, and certainly not meant to be an affront to anyone. Of course I know it takes great skill to create musical masterpieces, no matter what the scheme. I just needed help with the connection and some software. Sorry if I came across wrong; I've been known for that.

I'm through apologizing. (Don Imus, 2007)

Jeez, now I need a drink. (Dean Martin, 1965)

Thanks for the help, you guys.

What\'s with the rnrn thing where there\'s supposed to be a paragraph shift?

the rnrn should be \r\n\r\n which is Unix-speak for carriage return...it's some odd side effects of some updating I am doing...

\r is carriage return
\n is new line feed

or somethin' stupid like dat der...

hmmmmm, something is behaving weirdly...

ah ha! fixed it, I was running "stripslashes()" twice on the post content.

see, "addslashes()" or "mysql_real_escape_string()" are php functions that add slashes before special characters (single quotes, double quotes, slashes, etc) before going into the database to "escape" them so they won't error out the SQL calls and add some security, then, when pulling them out of the database you need to run "stripslashes()" to remove them so the posts don't have those slashes in there...I was running that twice so it was even taking out the slashes we WANT shown.

In case anyone gives a ****.

Emoticons and colon hyphen right parenthesis are just retarded tools for people who don't know other ways to communicate effectively I wish I knew how to end this sentence but

We got the MIDI cable yesterday. When Tam has some spare time, we'll activate the Finale. I'll let you know if it gets out of hand.

"My wife is looking for a program that converts piano notes to sheet music."
I use and I think that is good for your wife too: www.softspecialist.com/Mi...te-Composer.htm
If this seems to be expensive to you, there is also a cheaper version: www.softspecialist.com/Mi...te-Musician.htm

there are several good programs out there that do that....i'm pretty sure Sonar does it, as well as Digital Performer, and Logic....

musical notation is the EXACT same thing as midi (herb, i'm talking to you my friend, fear not the unknown) the biggest difference betwee "real-life" and musical notation is you can add lyrics, sub-notes, and other things to communicate the performance.

MIDI IS YOUR FRIEND!!! herb, this IS an older thread, but PLEASE let me/us open your mind to midi, it's not your fathers sheet music anymore. (bad expression).....midi, atleast to the composer is a GRAND and VAST tool that gives you HUGE amounts of control.

i too blew it off and figured "eh, i'm a bass player in a rock band, i don't need to know it" and i was VERY intimated by it. but once i got my head wrapped around it, i remember saying to myself "omg, i can do ANYTHING with this".

seriously, don't shun midi based on simple ignorance (no offense, i was using that word in it's most literal form) .....it's not all that hard.

and HERB, if you've already got a music computer up and running, and can afford to drop around $200 for a basic keyboard-style USB midi controller. once you get your head around it, the doors open before you before you even see them.

let me/us help you along the way, but if you are any kind of singer/songwriter that records original music at home in the dark with a good bottle of wine for fun....gettin' into MIDI WILL be a most joyous experience. don't be afraid of the learning curve either, midi data is unbelievably simple. it's just most of us "string instrument performers" don't understand it, and are therefore intimated by it.

let me know if you want me to elaborate. MIDI IS YOUR FRIEND! and it's not limited to 'electronic' music at all anymore.

throw a question at me/us if i've perked your ears but just arn't sure if that a road you wanna go down.

Tambra hasn't shown much interest in working with music lately, as she is in the home stretch of her Masters degree program - I am SOOO proud! - and it takes up much of her spare time. We haven't tried the program yet, but I'll let you guys know if we have any problems.

I'm not "anti-MIDI".

This may have been answered but Finaly (ms no doubt) is a scoring prog. It will take midi signal from anything that produces one and translate it to a dot on a page. It is one of the primier scoring packages and is used by orchestral groups, schools, etc. for creating full scores. You can also use mouse/keyboard to manualy score things out. It does have a lot of notations that other similar progs do not. As per above Cubase also has a scoring sub. I've heard Sibelius is good too. I see one simply called PrintMusic that claims to be a peared down Finaly.
