man, this is the third time i've gotten to work with real nashville session union musicians, and i swear, it blows me away every time....

we produced a guy in indiana that came down for two days (tracking only) and we banged out a whole cd...keep in mind these musicians have never heard the material before...all they did was listen to the artist play on an acoustic guitar, while they ALL charted out the song in real time...after about a 10 min. discussion on tags, and whatnot, they all split up and laid it down!...f'n amazing.

i got to play with a neve 9098i board, and real f'n LA-2A's and 1176's! all in all it's been a very insporational week....HA that's kind of a pun because we tracked at Trinity studios (think TBN christian network) they've got a whole village of tv studios (you know the preachin' shows and what not) and a seperate building of recording studios....here lemme see if they got a website....ahhh yeah here we go, we were in studio A.

www.tmcrecordingstudio.com/studio_a/studio_a.html

good times, next we get to mix it at SAE, prolly on a PT setup with Control 24, i donno yet.

good times!

oh, and dig this subwoofer...omg it's amazing!

My in-laws used to have a house on Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. They lived next to a Mr. Bott, who was apparently the king of Christian radio broadcasting in the US. I got the feeling that every religious broadcast station somehow went through him. He had so much money it was unbelievable...he built a zoo on his own property. A zoo! And a rodeo, and all sorts of other stuff. It was crazy touring that stuff.

Anyways, yeah christian broadcasting is big business. And its strange that it is like that, because I couldn't name 1 single person that I know that listens to christian radio on purpose.

But thats some awesome gear, must be fun to get to use such high-end tech toys (don't let the studio manager hear you call them toys tho hehehe).

Hahaha yeah you know when you're scouring the broadcast frequencies for something to listen to, and you come across a song that sounds ok, and then the traditional christian rock chorus kicks in: "God is good. Praise to God. God is great". Man I tell you that music is all God all the time! Every song, every chorus. I don't know of any other genre that's so intense about its purpose. Most artists do variations around a theme, but christian rock is all theme and no variation.

Apparently I'm in the minority of people that appreciate a little subtlety in my music because that stuff sells like hotcakes!

You are so incredibly off the mark in regards to modern Christian Pop music...sure, some of it is the standard "praise god" type of stuff, which is no weirder or more stupid than the opposite side of the spectrum singing about the horrendous things in life...violence and such...

Not all Christian music is all church songs, much of it is, at least in rock n roll, just positive messages of spirituality and good things in life. It just tends to be positive rather than negative, not necessarily an upbeat church hymn...

I am not a big listener myself, but I have heard enough to know that you are very, very wrong...

Sorry, but every christian rock song I've heard has been like that. Just calling it as I see it, that's all.

...then you have likely heard three songs...cuz there is a wide variety of music in Christian rock n roll...more variety than there is in death metal lyrics and musicianship...

When I hear it get put into a bucket it bums me out...cuz it's unfair. But not hard to understand...I listen to death metal and feel the same way, it's all the same, fast and boring about death and dismemberment, but somebody that likes the genre hears/see's or just cares about subtle differences that I just simply don't give a crap about.

and don't for get about the thugz and their ho's!

i'm kinda leaning with Tad on this one (as an outsider looking in) most of our clients are in the christian realm and i'm pretty hard pressed to think of a song that's not directly praising God or Jesus or whatever as the main theme of the song....i guess that's why they call it praise/worship. :/

every genre has it's stereotype, and every stereotype has a bit of truth.

as for stumbling on the christian station, i've done that a few times...the production in the style has gone over a major overhaul and they've adopted all the production techniques of modern pop/rock. so yeah it sounds like secular music at first because it pretty much is, until the praising begins....which is fine.

i love Lamb of God, now there's a christian band that's not all lovie-dovie, God bless this, God bless that, Jesus is lord etc. hell i don't even care what they're sayin', i dig the musicianship.

as far as what's on the christian station, i gotta say it all sounds very homoginized (sp?) much like everything else on the dial.

Yeah, there are truths in all sterotypes, and falsehoods...there are a few Christian bands that have flitted with mainstream secular success as well, Jars of Clay comes to mind...

I do see your point as far as "praise/worship" vs pop bands...The News Boys were (are?) a decent Christian Pop band, some praise songs, some just plain old good feeling lyrics...

I used to listen to jars of clay, dc talk, and the newsboys quite a bit in my youth. And I still listen to jars of clay on occasion. Not so much of the "god is great god is good" stuff, but all christian artists.

You know whats weird,I can tell when I stumble on one of those channels before the chorus.It all sounds the same.Uninspirable,unoriginal low grade pop.Sorry.I don't want to offend,just my thoughts on that genre.But then again anything that fits nice in any genre is boring crap for the masses.

Stavesacre would proably be along the lines of 'setting the standard'... thats the probalem with christian metal. it also sets the trend for secular metal because of the dynamics of the market.... for one it's legal to play on the radio :) Two it can reach the all important middleskooler market because it's not 'satan music' :)

So I would describe Stavesacre (yes still around), Zao, Every Day Life, Luti-Kriss/Norma Jean, and probably even Saviour Machine as 'genre defining "standards"'

I listed Gnashing of Teeth because they are an indie... not sure why they're not signed yet... might be holding out for a major lable.

I am guessing most of you don't realize the there are bands out the like POD and such that are considered Christian, even though they don't tend to lean on the moniker to sell records. Listen to POD and it is mostly positive lyrical content.

I'll even bring up one of our members, Rob Perez hwo has two projects. Visual Cliff and Fall of Echoes. Both are what I consider Christian bands. They as well donate from sales of their records to a couple of charities in need. If you have not listened to any of their stuff you are really missing out. Think of Dream Theatre and the like. And all the lyrics are very positive and uplifting. No praise the lord typs stuff going on there at all.

Jars of Clay are a staple here. I have met them and you would honestly never peg them as Christian rockers in the least.

well, it's early and I'm not thinking clearly but I'll reiterate that the request for a name of a 'edgy' metal band generally causes me to name christian bands mainly because they're easier to find because ...well... honestly I don't know of any Clear Channel metalcore stations :)

some of us #cough# met POD when they still played small venue church shows :) But yeah, I've briefly met Jars and they come off as a regular band... Ive even had another christian band ...Sonic Flood I think... barge into a recording session asking if anyone wanted to go drinking :)

for metal, i nominate Pantera as a great METAL band

as for country a great COUNTRY band (or rather artist) would be Johnny Cash.

Pantera,as far as I think did not fit neatly into that genre at that time.Johnny Cash is a poor example.He took country to a new level,He was way way way way on the outer edge.

I agree with vicdeluca71, though it depends on your definition of "country" I see Johnny Cash as very different from typical country.

As far as great metal, that is such a loose term, which decade of metal are we talking about?

You might even go as far as stating what year metal. Some of it seemed to change on a monthly basis during the late 80's through the mid to late 90's.

And ya, lumping Johnny Cash into the country thing would be kind of wrongish. He was more along the outlaw lines of Waylon and Willie and David Allen Coe. Although not as far over the edge as Coe was but you get the point.

Well, whatever, it sounds like a lot of fun WYD, a lot of fun. That's actually what i'm always looking for in musicians, the guys that can hear something and just play it straight back - awesome. I've played with a few but they really are few and far between. Especially if you want them to put some emotion into it too.

Just a small point as it's kind of a bugbear..

"It's" = It is.
"Its" = Belonging to it.
"Pros" = Professionals
"Pro's" = Belonging to the professional you're talking about.

..and while we're here - CDs, not CD's, that would be belonging to a CD.

I'm sorry but it just bugs me so much so i had to say something.

lol wow, this is good stuff...

my whole point of the 'genera' thing, is there is no rules, genera comes from the root word general as in 'a general area' the lines are not rigid....so it's a moot point §=oP

as for gramar, i'm from tennessee so all proper gramar rules do not apply! ain't got be havin' no gramar. §=oP

and Pantera is most definately metal! i donno what the heck you consider it.
