SX3 vs. MIDI. . . FIGHT!

Excuse me for posting a new topic as my first post, I know that there are other topics dealing with similar issues, but they date back a couple of years since the last posts and I wanted to make sure I found a reader to help.

There are a lot of issues in various forums about midi in SX3, none of which directly adress my problem.

I was previously using a midi controller, M-AUDIO keystation 49e, which was a squirly controller at best. The usb connection on the unit broke off into the body of the keyboard and after taking it apart several times, I was unable to resolve the issue. I alternatively routed a midi cable into my Lexicon Omega interface, which worked for what I wanted to do. (There were a couple of quirks still in that whenever I wanted to use the instrument, I had to have the controller turned on before my laptop booted up.) One 'magical' day, the keyboard on that controller stopped working, but I could see that a midi message was still transmitting whenever I utilized the pitch bend/mod wheels or any other button or volume fader on it. Having had problems with its insides previously, I assumed that there must be shoddy wiring to the keys, and decided to replace it with novation's ReMOTE LE - 25 key unit, which was on sale at musicians friend (definitely NOT an advertisement).

Here's where I start losing my mind: I got the unit in yesterday, followed ALL of the instructions for set up in the manuel, the addendum included, and finally the novation website. I have connected via both MIDI -> Omega -> USB -> Laptop & USB -> Laptop direct, yet, I am experiencing the same issue. All of the nobs and buttons are sending signals to cubase, but alas, no keyboard information for beutiful music making.

I have seen it suggested in a post from '05 to update my driver, but I'm not hip to drivers and don't know which one to download or even where to look. Any solutions or suggestions?

Also, I talked to novation this morning, learning very little about my situation. Hint for future reference: The number for help at Novation is international. . . if you set up an account with skype, you can make that call absurdly cheaper (also not intended to be advertisement, just helpful).

Welcome to HRC.

Sounds like quite a challenging experience you have there. In situations such as this I always suggest updating drivers.

In this case it seems they released new firmware (which is what I suspect they mean by "OS", or, operating system) found at www.novationmusic.com/productupdates.asp?id=20 just a couple weeks ago. They explain how to load it to your unit here 88.208.201.18/answerbase/article.php?id=305 follow the directions, you'll do fine...you are obviously a reasonably intelligent person seeing how you got around your problems as they arose, I trust you can do this even if you doubt if you can.

Do that before anything else.

Wow, that's one promt response. I will give that a shot and repost if for some reason it doesn't work. If that doesn't work, I guess I've probably got a bigger problem on my hands than I'd care to have.

Thanks again,

K, followed the directions to the T and even tried as many variations to the directions as I could come up with, but the program which novation had me download, MIDI-OX (for PC's fix), keeps poping up an error message everytime I try to send the *.syx file:

"SysEx Output Devices: The port is transmitting data to the device. Wait until the data has been transmitted, and then try again."

. . . waited long enough to know that if something WAS going to happen, it probably already would have.

Checked its 'help' on the topic. It says to make sure that Sysex is enabled. It's a Sysexual program apparently. . . not that there's anything wrong that.

I'm thinking that my next option is replacing some drivers, any tips?

Hey John, sorry I haven't gotten to this post before now. I will have a look tomorrow and see if I can scrounge up any dirt on that particular problem. It seems that there have been a rash of odd little problems as of late with lots of USB devices going their own way so to speak. I know I use a dedicated 8 port USB midi interface from M-Audio and have had nothing but good luck with it. As well my son uses a Radium 49 which is USB as well and it seems to be working just fine. They are however both older USB devices and the stuff we are talking about going wrong is all happening with new gear within the last year.

I'll ask this right off though. Are you trying to do the install with SX3 running by chance? That might cause a conflict.

I know I have done firmware updates via USB on all my Line 6 gear and have not had one lick of trouble with that. So I am wondering if Novation has a bug in their installer.

OK, it appears that the unit uses the Windows XP SP@ USB driver codec. It may appear in Cubase as a USB audio device. Make sure and go to your midi i/o port settings and choose it for input. You will also want to make sure the LE is in PLAY Mode for all controls including the keys to work properly.

You may want to check the OS that is currently in the LE as well. It is described in the manual on how to do that. Then if it is needed, make absolutely certain that nothing at all is using the USB buss before you send the .syx file to the LE for updating the OS.

Thank you very much for the needed information. I was planning to reinstall xp and see if the problem continued. . . I will definitely give your advice a shot before I take those measures.

Cheers,
