What determines the order MP3s are played from CD?

I am a real newbie at this.
I am recording a group of MP3 from lectures onto a CD. Since these are lectures the order they are automatically replayed and follow each other when the CD is played in "auto play" is important.
What determines the order they are replayed: the order they were burned to the CD, the alphabetical sort order of their names, something else?
They will be replayed on my car's CD player which can play MP3 CDs.
Thank you.

They should play in the order you burned them unless you play them in "shuffle" or "random" mode.

Thank you. I thought it might have to do with the file names (01....mp3, 02.....mp3, etc.).

On a data cd, like for my mp3 deck in my truck. I dump loads of folders(albums) in and select burn. It does indeed run them (both the folders and the files inside) in alphabetical order :( If burned to an audio cd I can order them as I like, but doing data cd's does not give me that control.

Yeah it'll be in alphanumeric order by filename. So I always precede my file name with a 2-digit track number and a dash. Like:

"01 - Disaster.mp3"

Be sure to pad to the left with zeroes or else you'll get strange play orders when you have 10 or more tracks.

On an iPod however, they will play in order by the track number in the ID3 tag. So make sure to fill in all of the important ID3 info if you're going to keep it digital and play it on a portable digital player.

How about that. I never burn mp3 CDs, so I assumed they would behave the same as standard ones. Well, shut up if you're not sure, Herb.

Well Herb if you burn them as audio tracks then yes they'll play in whatever order they're situated in like a normal CD would. That's something that you have to set up in your burning software, where you can click and drag the tracks or something like that. It ends up getting read as if it were a vinyl record...just follow that data track from start to finish.

With a data CD that's full of MP3s, they behave a bit differently. Since they basically have to get interpreted by an operating system of some sort, they'll usually be played based on file name.

I learned that the hard way when I got a CD player in my truck that's capable of reading MP3s. Fortunately, I'm very anal when it comes to organizing my MP3 collection so it was a smooth transition!

Right. Burning mp3s as an 'audio' CD automatically converts them to WAVs prior to the burn, and the player recognizes them as such. So it makes sense that if burned as a regular 'data' CD, just dumping the files in there, the playback device (computer) would access them alphanumerically.

The head in my car will do it either way. I can just load a random boat load of mp3's and it will align as stated above in alpha numeric. But only if I tell it to. Otherwise it will follow the track data the way it was loaded. I prefer to use the playlist function or folder function it has. I then number each folder and it follows them as if they are play lists.
