They are pretty different applications that work well together. I personally never open project 5 as a standalone application, but I do use the softsynths within Sonar all the time (I mean ALL the time). The synths and sounds of P5 are great, and work well within the MIDI tracks of Sonar.

I would think Noize might chime in here as well. So, Sonar doesn't come with the synths that P5 has?

Well, if it did, then there would be no need for P5 :-)

Sonar comes with a lot of synths, but not those...

they are the same thing as MIDI keyboard/synths...you can use them for textural effects and stuff, or you can play samples of other instruments and make it sounds like a bass, guitar, banjo, horns, choirs or any other instrument you have a sample of for it to work with. I use them a lot for drum beats, sometimes bass lines or keyboard parts and such like that. They are very useful to me personally. Noize2u pretty much uses synths exclusively for much of his work in sound tracks and sound designing. I don't use them THAT heavily, but I rely on them to make tracks of instruments that I can't play, or am simply to lazy too.

I am not saying that, I am saying I use them, many people don't like them at all and prefer it all "real". When MIDI and Digital Audio came out and people hated it and would only record analog and thought digital sucked...many of those people crossed the digital line and now hold the "software instruments suck" line...

Whether or not you want/need it is all dependant on you, your goals, the type of music you make, how you make it, etc...

ha ha, I only use software instruments. P5 has some very good sample based instruments in it. I love the strings (though most of the presets require a bit of tweaking for my taste). Basses are good for the most part (there's a large variety though). I just assumed Sonar would have all of them in it too. The drum samples are pretty decent too. I can't remember if what the horns are like (if there are any?).

Good strings are in Dimension...a light version of Dimension comes with P5, the full pro version absolutely rocks.

Yep, P5 is the shiznit when used on its own or ReWired into Sonar as part of a huge softsynth workstation. P5 version 2 records audio as well and has a killer bit in it called the Groove Pany which I use frequently to to arrange and set up loops, breaks and dubs. While Sonar does come with a couple good software synths they are nothing compared to what comes in P5 version 2. If you get it fire up Psyn II and just roam though some of the analog type patches. It and z3ta are my 2 most used analog type software synths. Although I have tons to choose from and several other bits from RGC Audio who is now part of Cakewalk I use them the most.

But if you have a specific question about using more with Sonar 4 let me know.

Do you have version 1 or version 2 of P5? There is a big difference between them in how you get to the synths and stuff.

what are you looking to do? place a synth in a track, or actually see the synth so you can fiddle with the knobs? or both?

Yep, what coolo said.

P5 is laid out really easy to use. When it opens the defualt it will have 3 audio tracks opened along with 4 Aux busses a Master buss and a tempo track. Simply highlite a track and then on the left hit add instrument and you will be ready to go. Remember to assign your midi and audio i/o as well.

No, I would stick with mixing down in Sonar. Although P5 is more then capable of doing it, Sonar is just laid out more for it.

I use both Sonar 6 PE and P 5 v2 for recording and mixing depending on what type of music I am doing really. If it is more loop and synth based I tend to use P5 all the way through. If it requires some heavy audio work then I go with Sonar. If it requires both, then I ReWire P5 into Sonar.
