New to cool edit pro, run into a weird problem, help please!

I am new to recording. I tried to record a song and apply effects to it. The recording part went smoothly. But I have been having weird problems with applying effects to the recording. No matter what effect I choose (under transform) for the recording for the first time, it will be applied successfully. But if I want to apply a second effect (no matter whatever it is), it sounds right in the preview, but once I click ok, the transforms recording always gets shrunk into 8 secs (from originally 2 mins). And when you play it, it sounds like you are fastforwarding the whole thing. Any thoughts? Thanks so much.
