So I'm looking to get a Pre-sonus Digimax. One with Fiber out so I can get another 8 channels for a total of 16 channels through Layla24. It looks cool and has the pre-amps built in.

What I'm dumb about. Word clock, so basically I connect the out on layla to the in on the digimax (using 75ohm coaxial). Set layla to send and digi to recieve? Is it really that simple?

You're exactly right, thats what I've read.

Too bad I have no clue what word clocks actually do.

Keeps two devices in synch. I know the midi guys use it alot as the are connecting multiple devices often. I've never had to before..

p.s. The digimax are just 8 channel pre-amps and some have fiber optic cable out that carries all 8 channels seperately and digitally. My layla has an optical in/out that allows me to add another 8 channels vs. 2 via spdif.

I've used word clock for years. Its not new at all. And yes, it is that simple.

I would make sure and take a good look at the Presonus before syncing (pun intended) any money into it. Especially if your looking at the DigMax LT. It is the low end unit for the DigiMax series and you might end up like Melty did with his Firepod. The feel of the units is a bit on the light side for me. But there are many out there that are having excellent luck with them as well. And also make damn sure it is compatible with the Layla. They claim to be compatible with several units and then state many more. Make sure the Layla is part of that many more.

That's weird, cause the LT is more expensive that the FS. I have seen them going for 300-500 on E-bay, that price would be a great deal even if Layla didn't like it and I had to sell it to one of the many Presonus users in town :) But thanks for the heads up, researching.......... now.

Ya, that is odd indeed as it has the least amount of bell's and whistles on it of the 3.

I looked at them a little closer. I notice the LT only goes to 48khz on sample rate where the FS does 96. When I try to record at 96 on my PC though, it hiccups quite a bit. I'm still looking at an LT pretty hard, just not too hard until tax returns (hooray for new baby girl!!!).

But yeah, I record at 48 right now, so if it's compatible and I can snag one for ~$300 that would add another pre-amped 8 channels to my setup on the cheap!!

I'm just thinking how cool it would be to have 16 channels all jacked into a laptop through laylas PCMCIA card, record live shows for local bands real cheap like, and then hand them the files to mix on their own, oh yes *evil grin*.
