So my mixer is old, crappy, and dirty. I hear crackling and rumbling when turning a knob or moving a slider. What's the best way to clean it... take it apart?

Go to your local electronics store and get some contact cleaner...take the knob off so the pot is exposed, spray a little cleaner on it and move the pot back and forth a few times...for faders, same thing.

that is much easier and probably safer than what I was going to attempt. thanks.

PS and off subject: You still got those monitors and amp for sale? If I get this job I am going to need a new pair.

Yeah, still got the JBL's and the Alesis amp, most everything else has sold though...damn, it's brought in a ton of money lately dumping a lot of crap I don't use any more.

cool. I got the interview next monday, so I will let ya know. If I get this job, which I'm only moderatly confident about since the manager told me flat out that there were a few other people wanting the position who were a bit better qualified than me, but he'd still give me an interview and see how it goes. I thought that was cool of him to be that honest with me. Okey, sorry, I'm rambling and this has nothing to do with the original post so I will bring it back.

Would the canned air stuff be of any use in the cleaning process, or would it potentially damage the gear?

It shouldn't damage anything (as long as you don't freeze it), but I don't know how much good its going to do.

And never use WD-40.

But you already knew that.

Look for a product called De-Ox It. It is a dry cleaner de-oxidizer. Most electronic outfits and music stores should have it.

+1 on the contact cleaner. I've successfully cleaned many pots this way. Just don't overdo it with the spray. :)
