I Basically have a Yamaha DGX-505 portable grand piano...I wanted to record it live with out using MIDI. I have an external Edirol M-100FX 10 channel mixer with voice/audio abilites....Basically I have a 1/4" cable from my piano's output to the input of the mixer. Im using a program called Cool Edit Pro to record sound from the input channel. Basically what i want to know is what tips can you give me to get decent/average sound quality. Basically when I have the volume up half way it distorts..When its to low you can barely hear it...I trying to find the right settings where I can record and its at a perfect volume and quality where its netiher distorting or soundin too low at times..

Have you checked the Windows Recording Mixer under the Options tab? Be sure 'Line in' is selected. Generally, all sliders in Windows Recording Mixer should be all the way down, believe it or not, or you may get a weird DC offset thing going.

*edit* also be sure you're using the line level input on your sound card, not the mic input.

on the mixer, don't use the channel volume, make sure you are using the gain knob.

and definitely make sure you are going line in on your sound card and not mic in.

you may also need to record it lower so you don't distort and then adjust the volume in CEP...

I've read in places where keyboard players were much happier playing their keyboards into an amp, of some sort, and then recording the sound from the speaker cabinet, using a microphone. I guess is depends on if you have a good full range amp, and a good microphone.

Maybe that's a solution for you to try.
