Cubase SX 3, delta 44 external effects set up

So I want to set up my outboard reverb unit and compressor as an external effects in cubase sx three. Right now I have the main outs of my mixer going into input 1 and 2 of the delta, outputs 1 and two of the delta to my speakers, inpu 3 going to the left output of the reverb unit, output 3 going to the input of the reverb unit, input 4 going to the left output of the compressor, and output 4 going to the left input of the compressor. In the VST connections panel for inputs I have one stereo configuration of M-Audio Delta 1/2, and outputs I have one stereo configuration of M-Audio Delta 1/2. In the external effects set up I only have the option to use M-Audio ASIO master for the send/recieve when I want to use M-Audio 3/4... I don't quite understand what to do.

Aha, I think i got it, hold on! lol. Yeah what I didn't release was I had to select the device port as the 1/2 or 3/4.

hmmm okey still not working, I figured out my reverb unit is busted, so I took that outta the loop, and I went into another effects unit that works and gives me a nice rich chorus sound. The loop makes sense to me, and the effects unit shows that it's getting a signal. Problem is that when I tweak knobs on it nothing happens to the sound coming out of my speakers.

yeah took me about 2 hours all together, aside from playing city of heros. I figured though, I've got some outbaord gear, might as well use that on the master section of the console in Cubase to cut down on CPU hogging... Now I need to buy a delta 1010 or 4, and some more compressors and reverbs, and I'll be good. haha.

hmmm okey, so while in cubase I compress via my outboard compressor till whatever track sounds good, lets say drums (since that is the issue), and then go to export the song as an mp3. While in cubase, the drums sound good, and I can see them hitting the compressors via the VU meter... however, when I listened to the newly exported MP3, the drums are squashed so much, they literally aren't even there. What's up with that? Same thing happened to a vocal track, only it didn't get squashed that much, the overall volume was just a lot lower and it buried it pretty deep in the mix.

this is getting on my nerves. What I'm hearing when I mix and record in cubase is not what I hear when I playback the MP3 in winamp or whatever. It exports in real time due to the use of outboard effects, and I like the way it sounds coming out like that, but the final result is crap. That and the panning issue which I can live with for now really has me at wits end. Anyone have any advice?

yeah, export to wav and see if it sounds good, then convert to mp3...see what is screwing it up, the mixdown or the encoding.

ah okey, that didn't work either... still not sounding anywhere close to what it sounds like in cubase and during the exportion process.

and apparently when I have the external effects as a plungin on a track, the mute and solo buttons don't do jack...

Nope they wont. Your looping a direct connection between your out and in which bypasses anything in cubase.

even though the output of the track is routed to the delta out 1/2, and the effects are routed to delta out 3 and in 3? this confuses me.

Have you tried a real time export?

If you've got spare outputs, run then Cubase master bus outs to a couple of new tracks in cubase and just record it?

Anyway, my $0.02 NZ.

yeah the only way cubase will export when using external effects is via realtime. With the effects loops i haven't got any spare outputs at the moment, the only thing i could maybe do is fold the outputs of the soundcard back to the mixer... maybe that will work.
