USB interface for laptop....?

Hey guys...after several years of service, my desktop has finally crapped out on me. It was obsolete anyway, so its no big deal. I just purchased my wife a laptop for a business that she's about to start. I have an external 250 gig harddrive that I can use for my recording and such. However, I have no idea what to use to interface my gear with the laptop.

Previously, on my desktop, I used the motherboard soundcard to (suprisingly) good effect. I recorded one at a time instruments, or at most, two instruments at a time onto a stereo image.

I dont have a need to record more than two instruments at a time.

I dont really know what the upsides and downsides of a USB interface are. I figure some of you fellas out there use 'em and can give me a bit of advice.

I would like something with a coupla low noise preamps on it. The lower the noise the better, obviously.

Thanx in advance....

Well you might get a bit more use out it then most, I know I use it more then I thought I would. A Line 6 Toneport UX-2 or UX-1 depending on your end needs. dB and I reviewed them a little while back. And I honestly love the little bugger. Set aside the guitar and bass emulations and it still has phantom powered XLR's for 2 mono or 1 stereo track's. And it has some absolutely killer mic pre emulations as well. Plus some excelant effects and it is all USB powered. I have used it on a good deal of stuff and it runs rock solid with the ASIO drivers with about 1 ms of latency.
