Time to call in John Popper I think.

I have tried it several times over the years. I suck (pun intended) at it though. But I have managed to do it on a few occasion's. It is the tongue that controls it. Funny enough though I can whistle backwards and forwards and bend both ways doing that, but I cant manage to make it work on the harmonica consistently.

Think of making a your tongue cup up and down to get the air moving faster or slower over the reed in the harmonica.

I play harmonica, to a certain degree. I can play the notes and bend on the draw (when you suck in) and so forth.

The best advice I can give anyone is to LISTEN to the great players, and then try to make your harp sound like them. I learned by listening to a lot of Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee albums. Also, Bob Dylan really is a good harmonica player, in spite of what some folks will say. Listen to his earliest recordings. He must have listened to a lot of Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee albums too!

Good luck!

ok, put the harp in your mouth, tip it up and cup it with both hands. blow. if you hear several notes, tip and adjust the harp till you hear only one note. that is the key. then practice opening and closing your cupped hands when playing the harp and notice the subtile changes that makes. from there, record a blues riff on the guitar in the key of your harp and jam with it.

Not to be a stickler or anything, but most blues harp is played as what is known as a "crossed harp", that is you use the harp that is a fourth above he key you're playing in. For example, to play blues in the key of "G" you would use a "C" harp. To play in the key of "E" you would use an "A" harp. (I think that's a fourth...)

So lay down some 12-bar blues in the key of "G" and jam along with your "C" harp!!

right-o thats not stickler its fact, i play sorta the folk way most of the time- and was just thinking about "last dance with maryjane" starts in a minor as i remember, and i used a c harp... i think. most of the other stuff i play harp on is similar to that type of style..
