It means layers of instruments that are hit differently, some harder and some softer. "Velocity" is geekspeak for "how hard ya hit it"

Just to expand a bit on what db just said........When you speak of velocity in MIDI, it's simply the volume level of the same sound. For example, you have the same snare drum sound in a MIDI file. Altering the velocity of that sound just results in the same sound at a different overall volume. When you're talking about layered samples, you're actually working with individual samples of the same snare drum being hit at different dynamic levels. So, in the ns kit, you may have 11 snare samples, all hit at different velocities, which, when triggered with MIDI, will result in a different dynamic sound as opposed to just an altered volume. When set up properly, say in the DR-008 drum sampler included with Sonar, you can achieve much more realistic drums than you can with MIDI. In other words, it's way cool!!! Happy Holidays to everyone !!

Thank you, sir !! That's my many, many hours in the basement coming out !! Lots of people only think about keyboards and sound modules when they talk about MIDI, but I've always loved all the stuff you can do with it. You haven't lived until you watch a whole rack of guitar gear change channels at the same time by stepping on one button !! Way too cool !! Anyway, I'm glad to help when I can. Thanks for noticing!

Or better yet, watching and hearing FX processor's, synth's, and everything else being controled in real time by the sequancer running on the computer. All via midi, I love it. I have used it for year's for controlling everything in the studio. I like the fact that CakeWalk built a tool for building control panel's to use in their program that will control anything you have ine real time. I have built panel's for every piece of gear in here.

And welcome, it's good to have another midi guru in the forum.

Peace

I can't find a little icon that's blushing, so I'll just say thanks again for the kind words.
