Thinking about upgrading my equipment...

Right now I have a US122 and a MXL990/991. I usually record acoustic songs/Rap vocals primarily to the fact that it only has 2 mic outputs. I've been wanting to expand on my equipment so that I could record full band demos.

I've been looking at several items and they seem to intrigue me...

PRESONUS Firepod
Alesis Multimix 16USB Mixer
Audio Technica AT2020/AT4040

If anyone knows about these items OR know of something better please feel free to drop a line. I'm also intersted in picking up a drum mic pack but i'm not sure which one to get.

I'm trying to shoot for a reliable price that provides reliable quality. If anyone could help THANKS!

Mike D.

PS: I'm new here, THIS PLACE IS GREAT!

Welcome to HRC.

AS for your choices. The Presonus Firepod is an excelant audio interface and would do exactly what you need. But the one thing to make sure you check into first is the chipset for your firewire interface. You will want to make sure it is compatable with the Firepod, as some are not. And also, make sure you have a 6 pin firewire port as the 4 pin have had some issues. But it is rumered that they have addressed the 4 pin issue and may have it fixed.

The Alesis unit is a goo dchoice as well. But it is limited to anly recording 2 tracks at one time as opposed to the firepod being able to do more.

the mixer however will allow you to mic an entire drum kit and then mix it down to be recorded to 2 tracks of audio. Not the best but it works.

The Audio Tehnica mic's work splendid and either of those would be good all around choices for you.

I use a firepod, the pre-amps soudn good, and i use 6pin to 4pin wire for my computer and it works fine.
the one thing about the firepod is that they craftman ship on it is below par. i think it would be a much better unit if they just took some more time and didnt cut so many edges, to many plastic parts where metal should be sort of thing. But in the end im glad i got it because if were to buy anything that even came close to having the firepower the firepod you'd probably pay at least 2 times to money.. so if does break, i can buy a new one and still save money haha... and it hasnt broke yet, or even came close.. it jsut feels cheap plugging things in/out of it.

Oh ya, the drum mic pack thing. I have looked at a couple of the Shure packs and they are all good. They are a well built kit and definately worth the money you pay for them. I know a few have tried the Audix stuff and another I forget the name of. Some where happy, but most were not satisfied wit the sound. So indeed keep leaning to Shure as they are reputable and a long time mic manufacturer.

Depending on the vocal style you are going to record and your drummer you might want to consider an outboard compreser. It will come in handy for making sure you get the most level signal into your recordings. There are several good ones out there for a fair price.
