so I'm thinking about switching to linux. Will cubase work in linux with one of the windows emulators, or am I tied down to using windows as my platform?

okey, so I downloaded an ISO, burned it to disk, changed the bios to boot from disk because that way it should just use the live cd for linux and boot it right up, but it doesn't. Instead it only shows window as the operating system. In win xp pro how do I make it boot from disk?

You have to make sure the CD was burned as a bootable CD and that the linux OS you downloaded can run from the CD. There are distro's that can but you may just have downloaded an install type ISO.

I doubt very much that Cubase or any other Window's Audio app will run satifactorally if at all under Linux & emulation. If Window's is bugging you Linux will probably bug you even more. :)

Everyone I know that is hard-core into serious media production uses Macintosh, but it's a tough sell to a lot of PC users.

Is your hardware BIOS set to dual operating system mode ? Good Luck, sounds like one of my crazy antics !

I use DeMuDi linux (RC 1.3.0) after ditching windoze last winter.

If you have a very fast computer it may be able to run cubase in wine... I've heard that SONAR 2 runs... but there are plenty of audio apps native to linux as development went gangbusters last spring... most significantly is firewire drivers being developed and included in JACK via the freebob project.

The most important thing is assure youre card is supported... which M-Audio cards are by the ALSA project...

If you rely on midi sounds you may have some problems... but it's free... so see if it meets your needs...

ISO CD's need to be burned as ISO CD's which many CD writing software cannot do.

I chose linux because I don't like OS-X's GUI...actually I hate it... mostly just the dock... it's just crippled gnome setup inconviently anyway...

...and linux ran on my existing hardware... well... minus the Aardvark Q10 :P... but my new FA-66 is nifty...

Actually one of the really cool things that I'll probably be putting together this fall for my church is the "idiot proof studio"...

basically my church needs a cheap PC that can record choir practice and service and be run by anyone... the really under used and nifty part of linux is that most apps don't depend on the GUI interface and have consol commands... which can be scripted... so

1. luser turns on computer
2. luser navigates to exceptionally obvious icon via mouse
3. luser clicks or double clicks icon... which is actually a script
4. script starts JACK and Ardour, loads presets and starts recording
5 after service or choir practice, luser clicks a different obvious icon which is also a script
6 new script mixes audio, normalizes, converts to a set format (maybe interactive menu) and burns a CD, ejects CD, and powers down.

(or starting recording is part of the startup sequence and mixing, burning and ejecting a CD is part of the power down sequence... and no other user interaction is required)

However, I get to start training others on the sound equipment in october... :)

well when my backup finishes I am going to be re-installing windows fresh, and also installing linux to do a dual boot system so that for all my regular stuff I can use linux, and for music I can use windows. It should be cool. I'll let ya know in about 14 hours.

it was probably the boot loaders... sometimes it's easier to just have swapable harddrive bays too. :)

One of the caveats I heard, was to install windows first, as it won't play with the boot loader stuff.

But you already did that, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Which distro are you using? Plus, you may not have loaded a boot loader. In RedHat 9 , and fedora core, I think it asks you if you want to install the boot loader. Grub, I believe. I don't dualboot, so I don't load it.

I'm kinda with Zek, put one OS on a drive (or machine) and leave it. course I tend to collect old usable PCs for linux, so that probably helps.

That said, I have dual booted before, so it can be done. Just that a lot of linux stuff is not for the faint of heart =).

Anyone here use linux and can tell me why I'm having a problem? If so hit me up on yahoo at liquidtrashdoll and we'll talk. It involves my soundcard and cd player.

linuxquestions.org

is it a "cant access sound device/ CDrom" type eror? it may just be permissions because often system devices are set to root...
