I was watching a band the other day in a local pub and was chatting to a guy about gigging over the years. He seemed to have a good insight to the biz and said he used to play in Hawkwind.Turns out he was one of the founder members John Harrison (bass). His daughter said she would love to see him play again if only one song so next time Im at that gig Im going to coax him up.

OOooo, I'm a bit jealous I would say. Meeting any of the members of Hawkwind would definately tweak my fancy. And indeed John Harrison is one of the founders of Hawkwind. He wrote some excelant music to move your mind rather then your fanny.

Nice indeed to have chatted with him I am sure.

Yeah small world,he was saying how they used to jam a lot in the early years in clubs around London and the list of famous people he came out with was amazing.I told him about when I played in Hamburg, John Anderson and Steve Howe (Yes)walked in and we got them up.He laughed and said all of the players in Yes were always up for a jam and were well known for it in London. You often find that some people you talk to at gigs are making stuff up and are good at it,but this guy had a deep (been around) voice and wasn't bragging.Still, just in case, I Googled him and its definitly him.

There were certain clubs here that would have big time musicians would show up at to enjoy a good local show. Not so much anymore as most of those clubs are now closed. But there are still a couple that get the occasional sit in from someone famous.

My cousin was in a blues club around metro detroit.

He was chillin, watching the sunday night open mic blues thing, and the MC says they're going to take a break while they set up for someone who just came in.

20 minutes later, he was treated to about an hour of Robin Trower.

Super loud, and about 15 feet way.

I have some friends around det that were sitting in a club, when Ted Nugent comes out and starts playing with the house band. I guess he used to do that fairly often, I don't know if he still does, I'm not around the city anymore.

First Avenue in Minneapolis still has that happen now and then, just a couple years ago Joe Perry and Steven Tyler were there the night before they had a gig, they were backstage watching Cheap Trick, then came out on stage and jammed with them for a couple tunes...I didn't get to see it, but I heard it was awesome.

First Avenue is right across the street from the Target Center, where lots of big shows are held...

Billy Joel used to play Glueck's bar (little dive) whenever he was in town, he even said in and interview or two that it was one of his favorite little dive bars in the world...if he's in town he'll stroll in and play the piano for a while.

Johnny Winter was always good for that a few years back and even further. Seems he had a thing for 2 roudy bars here. The Cabooze and Whiskey Junction. There were frequantly hardcore blues bands there and he would just show up and play. As well as just plain hang out and drink with the audiance members.
