just started working in the new studio...so far so good...except with the whole monitoring thing...

i used to send headphone mixes using the sub busses on my mixer, but ive started using tube preamps and they dont run through my mixer, so i am unable monitor the sounds coming through these preamps...i keep reading about "direct monitoring with zero latency" how the heck can u do this? using steinberg nuendo and m-audio delta 1010lt and the delta 44...how am i able to monitor whats coming through those preamps and into steinberg without latency....ive tried using the "direct monitoring" option...and i click the little monitoring button and its delayed...ive read that its possible to have no latency by having the signal get sent out of the soundcards "out" before it gets processed by nuendo...therefore not introducing latency...im puzzled and the studio is useless until i figure this out...

i use sonar and a delta 1010lt and i get the same problem... i think my computer's just too slow to process all the effects and send it back out in time to have no delay... its only got 512 Mb RAM

the method im talkin about gives u the ability to control your cue mixes from within the mixer in nuendo...and alot of people do it...and i cant figure it out...it wont work...i tried the whole monitor mixer thing and its delayed...i already tried it...im gettin frustrated

To monitor your inputs directly, you either have to select "Monitor Mixer" or "HWx/y IN", where x and y are the inputs that you're plugging your tube pre into.

Say you set HW OUT 1/2 to Monitor Mixer. Then if you monitor from HW OUT 1/2, you'll hear everything that's being sent to your M-Audio card. This includes any output busses that you have routed to it in Windows/Nuendo plus any inputs that you have going into your M-Audio card. Only the inputs will be directly monitored since all of the signal coming out of Nuendo would be playback. Make sure to turn each track's monitor OFF.

Or if you select HW IN 1/2, then if you monitor from HW OUT 1/2, all you will hear will be the direct signal from HW IN 1/2 and nothing else.

This is the zero-latency monitoring that they're talking about. You're monitoring the input signals directly, not passing them through your PC and back out the HW OUT 1/2. They're being directly routed from HW IN 1/2 to HW OUT 1/2 because of the setting in the Delta control panel.

Neither of these two methods will allow you to "control your cue mixes from within the mixer in nuendo", I have no idea what you're talking about there.

if i adjust the volumes and panning with the M-Audio mixer....will this affect the way the inputs are sent to nuendo? cause im trying to figure out how to make decent headphone mixes...

Yes, if you adjust the input levels and panning on the M-Audio mixer it will indeed effect the way it gets to its final destination.

Sometimes hardware and software cannot be made user friendly. But there is alwasy a way around it. Or learning to take the time to make it work by flipping all the right switches.
