Need Advice on Marantz PMD (660 - esp Oade Mods)

Hello Home and Field recorders... good to meet you.

I am looking to make the jump into some more interesting field recording equipment. The PMD 660 seems to present a great next step in terms of something simple but very functional I could use for a long time and not have to worry about equipment for a while.

My question about this has to do with some of the complaints I've seen online about its stock sound, and the resulting mods. Everyone talks about Oade Bros mods.

Has anyone here used PMD 660's extensively? Even better if you can compare stock and modded models. Oade has sound clips that aren't quite revealing enough for me to make a decision.

I will be recording mainly music, primarily acoustic, but possibly some electric as well. I kinda like "lo-fi" but not doing lo-fi for its own sake, only because sometimes lo fi sounds better than hi fi for a particular project, ... I couldn't tell on the oade site but it sounded like some of their mods increased bass presence and gave it almost a produced, slicker sound that I would like to avoid. Just being more "accurate" would be fine and of course I don't want tons of hiss which would give listeners a headache, but some light imperfections can sometimes add to a recording...?

Anyway... weigh in...

Thanks in advance!

PS Previously I did all my field recording on handheld tape recorders or sony ic recorders. and, I definitely want better sound quality than that. Quite functional for capturing ideas though. I have a range of mic's I will be using with my new field recorder, many of which use phantom power, are condenser mics (example: Studio Porjects C3, C4).

Hello sunna, welcome to HRC.

As for the Marantz unit, I will state up front it was really designed as a recorder to be used by reporter's and the like. It does not have the best quality used for your typical musical content. And with some types of condensor mic's it does still have some hiss present, especially with a more powerfull condensor. The unit does actually have some great features such as pahantom power for the condesnors and a USB transfer port for getting the audio to a PC. But I dont personally think the sound quality is worth the $450.00 or higher price tag they are asking for the unit.

I know Tascam as well as a couple others have come out with units that are far better suited to musical content then the Mrantz unit. When I get a little time I will try and look them up. I know several have been mentioned on this site soa search might turn those threads up as well.

Otherwise one of the others here using similar devices may pop into this thread and give you some advice as to what direction to look.

Thanks for the welcome and the info!

Could that be one of the Tascams you are talking about?
The specs seem nice, it's about 2x the price, but it does sound like it was tailored for music.
I heard the same thing about those marantz, (npr uses them widely), I just kept coming back to it as it seemed a lot of people favored it in the general 'field recording' area and supposedly those mods (you can see elsewhere on that link) brings the sound quality up paying $550-$750 instead of the usual price, that might be more economical if those mods bring the quality up to that tascam which costs $900+... I guess we'll see what people say, it's also possible that a music store near me carries both

The main things I am looking for right now are the compact flash, battery powered, and 2 phantom power xlr's. everything else from there will be a tradeoff of sound quality/features to price.

I do have to agree with you on the price/quaqlity trade off. If indeed the mods can bring the quality up it would be worth it. There is a smaller uinit out there and it might be another manufacturer other then Tascam I am thinking of. I will ask around on some of my buddies that use units for sampling and see what the buzz is on the Marantz after being modded.
