I'm looking to start a web based business and heard that PayPal is a horrible route to go accepting credit cards online, but all the competitors don't look anywhere near as professional. Does anybody have any experience with any companies providing this service?

We opted for doing it manually, here at the place I'm working.

I have the info recorded (securely, of course) into a database, then the person doing orders here webs into the database (securely) to get the info for that order.

Then the person here inputs the CC info by hand. This avoids any 'per order' charge, plus any yearly fee for the service.

That said, I think dB has set this up, and is using it for his $$$ stuff on this site. So i'm sure he'll kick in with some info.

I have used PayPal for about 5 years and have had exactly one single problem with them, which got worked out...I have absiolutely no problem recommending them as they have been great, and it's easy to work with for even non-techie developers. Most "better" or more professional services requires much more knowledge of payment gateways, XML datafeeds to feed the gateway and other such things.

Doing it yourself would require SSL cert on your site and payment processing on your end, which can be a hassle, and expensive. To me, PayPal has always done the job.

I kinda figured that would be the response, but didn't want to speak for you =)

as a side note, i've used some of those 'other' payment types that are used from within EBAY, and i gotta say, they stink. multiple parts, redundant entry, secondary sites, etc.

ugh, i won't do it anymore.

Maybe they're better now, but they sure were a pain in the past.

I had read all these sites warning about paypal freezing accounts over supposed fraud, but on further inspection all the anti-paypal websites promote a single alternative free-merchant.com which has led me to believe it was a big scam to push people away from paypal. Thanks for the reassurance dB.

I've used paypal for a couple years... mostly making payments on it... but I've gotten donations for the aardvark site through it... the only problem I( had was sometime after I make the link for the button they changed their system and it didn't work... so I just made a new one...

Yep, PayPal here as well. If purchasing online I will always choose PayPal over the other methods as it is faster and reliable.

I'm really pissed at PayPal right now. My account is frozen over suspected fraud, and no matter what I do I can't get it worked out.

There are several things they want me to do online, and they can't be done. One of the things is "Please provide proof that you shipped these orders:" and then there are NO orders listed. Another is "Please fax us the following documents:" and there are NO documents listed.

Every attempt to contact PayPal about this has landed me the generic copy and paste responce of "Please log in to your account and complete the steps listed in the resolution center." Well that's what I tried to do, and it's not working. My account has been suspended for over a month now and there's really nothing I can do about it. It really sucks because 75% of my sales are through my website, and the only payment option is PayPal.

I did call them. They kept telling me I had to log on and go to the resoultion center.

Oh jeez, that sucks. I had to deal with the Resolution Center once, and it isn't the easiest thing to do, and almost drove me to leave, but then, after I wrapped it up I figured one problem in many years, I'd cut them some slack...

Dont just count on Paypal as the perception out there is one that will only hurt you. I use a company called Experthost and their gateways are fantastic. 4 yrs running with no problems. You will need to offer your customers the ability to buy via Visa or Mastercard and the cost of having these running is very minimal. Relying solely on Paypal is not a good idea.

You may be better off going with something like:

Yourpay.com

It only cost me a bit over $200. You can use their shopping cart or one of your own.
